Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure

The radio operator in Mantu was fatally shot during the raid but managed to gasp "Slade" over the shortwave radio before dying. This identified Slade as the mastermind behind the attack. Additionally, the raiders had stolen dynamite and killed villagers, including the village doctor, which motivated Tarzan to protect his territory and bring the criminals to justice.

The raid occurs at night under cover of darkness, showing the raiders' deliberate effort to remain hidden until the operator's dying words expose them.

A small plane taunted Tarzan with low flyovers during his chase, but its engine suddenly stalled and crashed into the river, dumping Angie, an American ex-fashion model, into the water. Tarzan unwilling to abandon her, brought her aboard his canoe. She then traveled with him for the rest of the pursuit.

Their riverboat malfunctioned mid-journey, causing tension and suspicion among the criminals. The breakdown created distrust as they approached the diamond mine, with each thief suspecting the others of sabotage or betrayal. This internal conflict led to one thief abandoning the boat entirely.

The thieves were already described as a "quartet of thieves" with mutual suspicion, and the boat failure amplified their existing mistrust.

One thief left the malfunctioning boat and later drowned in quicksand while trying to escape through the treacherous terrain. Another was killed when Tarzan caught up to the raiders and shot him with a bow and arrow. A third accomplice died when Slade's plan to use Angie as bait failed, resulting in the loss of yet another gang member.

After Angie was captured trying to steal medical supplies from Slade's boat, Slade recognized an opportunity to use her as leverage. He believed Tarzan would come to rescue her, allowing Slade to set an ambush. The plan failed when the trap didn't work as intended, costing the life of another accomplice in the process.

Angie's attempt to steal supplies was impulsive and put her directly in danger, which Slade exploited.

When only Slade and Kreiger remained at the mine, Kreiger attempted to kill Slade to claim all the diamonds for himself. There was no honor among the thieves, and Kreiger decided eliminating his partner would be more profitable than sharing the loot. His betrayal was purely motivated by greed.

The narrative establishes early on that the thieves distrust one another, building toward this inevitable betrayal.

Kreiger offered Slade all the diamonds in exchange for his life, but Slade remained unmoved and killed him anyway. Slade valued neither loyalty nor money, he simply eliminated anyone who posed a threat or might betray him. This demonstrated Slade's cold, ruthless nature and preference for working alone.

Tarzan was wounded during the pursuit, but Angie tended to his wounds and nursed him back to health. By the time he confronted Slade at the river bluff, he had recovered enough strength. In the final fight, Slade initially gained the upper hand by lassoing Tarzan with a wire noose, but Tarzan's superior strength and endurance allowed him to break free and push Slade over the cliff onto the rocks below.

Angie's medical care earlier in the story directly enables Tarzan's victory at the climax.

After pushing Slade to his death on the rocks below, Tarzan traveled back upriver to Mantu and his treehouse. The villagers welcomed him back since the danger had passed. The story ends with Tarzan restored to his home among the trees, having successfully stopped the raiders and protected his jungle territory.
