Mary Katherine Gallagher grows up as an earnest dreamer with a comic, if unconventional, sparkle. A moment of tree-kissing embarrassment lands her in special education, where she forges a surprising friendship with Helen Lewengrub. A new, rough-edged student, Eric Slater, notices her, adding a dynamic that blends attraction with danger.

A school talent show is announced, offering a dreamlike prize: a trip to Hollywood and a chance to become a movie extra. Mary’s grandmother initially forbids participation, but Helen and a vision of Jesus push her to audition anyway, suggesting a higher purpose beyond personal glory.
