In Albuquerque, Roy Belvedere attempts to hang himself in a motel room. Just as he is about to die, he spots a person in a monkey suit staring at him. He awakens in the passenger seat of his RV, driven by the same monkey-suited woman who explains she needs to reach a lake in Colorado. Roy reluctantly agrees to drive to his mother’s house first since he had left a suicide note the night before.

On the road, Monkey explains her goal is to reach a Colorado lake and why she needs Roy's help. Roy protests but ultimately capitulates when she frames the trip as a chance to save him. He agrees to visit his mother first, then drive her to Colorado as planned.

They arrive at Roy’s mother Gail's house, only to find her drunk and emotionally wrecked after receiving Roy's suicide note. A heated argument follows during which Gail reveals a bitter truth: the gold watch Roy's late father gave him was fake, and the real watch is buried with his father. Roy is stunned by the revelation and the family’s secrets.

Infuriated by the revelation, Roy drives to the cemetery to dig up his father’s grave and retrieve the real watch. Monkey agrees to accompany him on the condition that she be driven to Colorado and given half of the watch’s value (about $20,000). They shake on a deal and resume the journey with renewed resolve.

As they travel, Monkey reveals more about her past and her other self, Jane, and the abuse she endured from Wade. Wade tracks her using credit card transactions and begins pedaling after them on a bicycle, applying relentless pressure. Roy and Monkey’s bond deepens amid the danger of pursuit.

During their voyage, Roy learns Monkey’s true name is Jane and that Wade intends to reclaim her. Wade’s pursuit grows more intense as he closes in and uses legal and illegal means to locate them. The stakes rise as their relationship develops under pressure.

Stop for the night, Monkey shares her fears and hopes to pay Roy back someday, hoping he will still love her. They share a tender moment as Roy lays in her embrace, the walls between their worlds beginning to blur. The night seals a growing trust between them.

The next day Monkey makes advances on Roy, which he reciprocates, but she explains this is driven by her other self and not to complicate things if Jane is ever able to break free. She asks him to understand that her impulses come from within the suit and must be navigated carefully. They continue their journey with the uneasy tension but also growing closeness.

They finally reach the cemetery and spend the night digging for hours until Roy pulls the coffin and retrieves the real watch. They narrowly escape detection by the groundskeeper. The act deepens their bond even as danger closes in around them.

In the morning Roy tries to pawn both watches, hoping to recoup the money; the pawn shopkeeper reveals the watches are fake and swindles him. The shock triggers a breakdown, and Roy buys a wolf suit in a moment of despair. Monkey offers quiet support as the situation spirals.

Wade catches up to Jane at a laundromat and forces her back into the Monkey suit; she locks herself inside to resist. Roy arrives to rescue her, and a high-speed chase ensues; Monkey suddenly leaps from the RV to block Wade’s bicycle, taking a fatal injury and ending Wade's pursuit.

After the rescue, Roy gets Monkey to a hospital for treatment while Gail arrives and Roy is arrested. He is charged with grave desecration and disposal of a dead body and is sentenced to two years in prison. The fallout leaves him separated from Jane for a long period.

During an interview with Roy’s former radio boss Vashti, they recover a tape recorded by Monkey that reveals her true identity as Jane and explains why she stayed in the suit. She thanks him for their time and for believing in her, revealing the emotional cost of her facade. The confession reframes their relationship in his absence.

Two years later, Roy finishes his sentence and travels to Colorado, where he finds Jane running a pontoon and banana boat ride attraction. She finally removes her mask and reveals her face to Roy; they confess their love and take a lake ride together, though Roy experiences a mishap when he falls off the banana boat. The ending ties their bond to a new life together.
