A triumphant Shanmugamani returns to the school where he studied, taking up a Tamil teacher post. Despite his poor background, he was the state top in his twelfth standard exams and is treated with respect. The opening scenes set up his credentials and status in the school community.

Priya, the brilliant yet mischievous student leading the twelfth standard batch, targets Shanmugamani with pranks. He is irritated by her indiscipline, and her antics continue despite his attempts to admonish her. The teacher-student tension begins to simmer in the classroom.

Priya's classmates plant a fake love letter written as if by Priya and place it in Shanmugamani's desk. He misreads it as Priya's own confession and uses it to accuse her of mischief. Priya, believing he wrote the letter, falls in love with him.

Shanmugamani and the staff confront Priya over the ongoing pranks, leading to her suspension without a chance to defend herself. The rumor mill damages Priya's reputation in the eyes of the school authorities. The situation forces both parties to re-evaluate their relationship.

Shanmugamani realizes there is no fault with Priya and apologizes to her for the misunderstanding. He also notes that their reputations are tainted and that perhaps their paths should be redefined. Unable to resist Priya's persistence, Shanmugamani marries Deivanai, a girl from an orphanage, in a decision that shocks Priya. Deivanai becomes his wife and enters the household with new hopes. The marriage introduces a new dynamic to the love triangle.

Deivanai and Priya develop a complicated relationship. Priya helps Deivanai learn to cook, speak English, and generally become a better wife, all while keeping her romantic feelings for Shanmugamani intact. Deivanai initially resents Priya but grows to understand her.

Priya's attempts to win Shanmugamani's love continue even as Deivanai's presence makes the situation tense. Shanmugamani warns Priya to keep away from their life and refrains from giving her any marriage promise. The emotional conflict escalates.

Deivanai overhears conversations hinting at Priya's past and plans, choosing not to react rashly. Instead, she escorts Shanmugamani and Priya to a hospital for a check-up, signaling growing concern for Priya's wellbeing. The episode marks a turning point in how the women relate to each other.

It is revealed that Priya is battling cancer and has limited time left. The diagnosis reframes the stakes and makes her insistence on Shanmugamani's marriage a final wish rather than a mere pursuit. The narrative centers on love, loss, and duty.

Deivanai urges Shanmugamani to marry Priya so she can fulfill her last wish before dying. He reluctantly agrees, driven by compassion and the respect he holds for Priya. The arrangement is meant to honor Priya's love and sacrifice.

Priya passes away in her school, in the very classroom where she once caused mischief. Her death is serene yet heartbreaking, marking the end of her long struggle. The scene is punctuated by emotional tributes from her teachers and friends.

In her final recorded speech, Priya praises Shanmugamani for remaining steadfast that a teacher should not marry his student. She bequeaths her jewels to Deivanai, and expresses a vow to be born again as their child. In a symbolic ending, Shanmugamani and Deivanai place Priya’s jewel on their newborn baby, sealing the sense of rebirth and lasting connection.
