Stephane (Victor Lanoux), mayor of a small village who runs the tannery that employs most residents, kills his wife (Edith Scob) in a sudden rage. Judge (Jean Carmet) must prove his guilt, but social pressure, due to the town’s reliance on Stephane’s tannery and his influence, makes the case difficult and threatens the fragile community.
