Eva, calm and capable, takes charge in small but meaningful ways—cleaning the apartment, which is not exactly pristine, and even tackling the vacuum cleaner with a humor that gradually wins him over when she challenges his playful claim that an American expression for vacuuming is “choking the alligator.” The two share ordinary days: football games, late-night sci-fi screenings, and an evolving, unspoken bond. Eva returns from a shopping expedition with a few canned goods, a TV dinner “especially” for him, and, to his surprise, a cigarette carton—tokens of care that make Willie smile and shake her hand, muttering, “I think you’re alright, kid.” He even buys her a dress, though she wears it with a certain reluctant practicality. When the ten days pass, Eva leaves, and Willie is clearly pained by her absence. Snow grips the middle of winter as they reach Eva’s hometown. They pause at Aunt Lotte’s house, then return to Eva’s world, where she works at a local fast-food place and is clearly glad to see them. The trio falls into familiar rhythms—card games with Lotte, casual detours to the movies, and a lingering wish to stay longer than the moment allows. A trip to the pier on Cleveland’s snowbound lakefront provides a quiet, bittersweet score to their renewed companionship. Yet the tug of home and the desire for something different push Willie and Eddie back toward New York, with Eva’s lighthearted suggestion that, if they ever win big enough, they might “kidnap” her—as a joke, perhaps, or a dare. Willie’s response lands with a practical chill: they’d take her somewhere warm, because “this place is awful.”

The road trip morphs again when Willie proposes Florida as a destination, only to pivot and pick up Eva in a move that pleases Aunt Lotte as little as it pleases her guests. The trio arrives at a Florida motel and settles into a tense, sun-washed hush. Eva wakes to find Willie and Eddie gone, and she discovers she has been left behind with little food and no cash. She wanders out to the beach in the windy, bleak seaside light, a stark echo of the earlier Lake Erie scenes. The men, meanwhile, squander most of their money at the dog tracks, a turn that clouds the mood with frustration and a sense of betrayal. Eva’s dependence on them becomes a thread of vulnerability that she will not ignore.

Willie, still wary of dragging Eva into danger, refuses to let her join the next gambit at the horse races. She eventually crosses paths with a drug dealer who mistakes her for a courier and hands her a thick envelope of money, along with a stern rebuke from a man who seems to know her supposed employer. She returns to the motel, leaves some funds for Willie and Eddie, and writes a note explaining that she intends to fly home. The airport beckons: a plane bound for Budapest is mentioned, and Eva wavers between returning home and exploring a broader future.

When Willie and Eddie arrive at the airport, Willie buys a ticket in a bid to persuade Eva to stay, assuming she has boarded the Budapest flight. The penultimate image lingers on Eddie watching the sky as the plane climbs, a quiet lament that Willie may have boarded as well, leaving Eva and Eddie to face an uncertain horizon. The final sequence returns to the motel room, now empty and quiet, with Eva returning to the vacant space, tired and puzzled, fiddling with her straw hat as the weight of the choices they have made settles in.
