Bryan, the mayor’s son, is murdered in his home and his body is later found stuffed and posed as a scarecrow. The shocking crime unsettles the town and triggers a police investigation led by John Brady. The case hints at political ties and a chilling, ritualistic vibe.

Local policeman John Brady launches a full investigation into Bryan's murder, interviewing neighbors and reviewing evidence. He quickly senses that the case may be connected to darker, ethically questionable experiments in town. His suspicions escalate as new clues emerge.

Pete sits in on a course at Galesburg University with his friend Oliver. After Gwen Parkinson screens a lecture by her late mentor Le Sange, Pete agrees to become one of Gwen's test subjects to fund his college applications. The arrangement pulls him into a dangerous experimental program.

At a house party, Waldo is stabbed to death outside, and his girlfriend Lucy is attacked near the pool. The attacker flees, and in the distance he removes his mask to reveal himself as Oliver. John Brady questions Oliver, who claims he cannot recall the events due to being drunk.

Medical examiners observe Waldo's bizarre incision near the eye. After examining the evidence, John concludes that two different people are responsible for Waldo's and Bryan's murders. The idea of a two-pronged killer hints at a bigger conspiracy.

Pete attends one of Gwen's studies at a large laboratory that hosts human and animal tests. Gwen makes him swallow a pill and recite words before dismissing him. She then invites Caroline to date, and the two begin a romance.

The following day, a woman discovers her son Timothy being dismembered in his bathroom by an unknown young woman. She phones the police before being stabbed herself, and barely manages to tell a friend what the killer looks like before she is killed.

John suspects the female assailant may be one of Gwen's test subjects and confronts Gwen at the laboratory. He is unaware that Pete is in a test room, tied to a chair.

After John leaves, Gwen resumes the session and injects a mind-control fluid into Pete's eye. Pete awakens, confused, and is dismissed, but the mind-altering effects begin to take hold. The manipulation marks the start of a dangerous turn.

Pete goes to dinner with Caroline but becomes violently ill and begins urinating blood. The unsettling symptoms coincide with his exposure to Gwen's experiments, deepening the sense that something sinister is happening.

John discusses the cases with his girlfriend Barbara, hypothesizing that the victims are sons of men who previously worked with him to investigate Le Sange's experiments. He believes Le Sange is alive and seeking revenge. Barbara accompanies him to the cemetery to search for clues.

Barbara follows John to the cemetery and helps him break into Le Sange's crypt. The casket is empty except for two skeletonized lower legs, confirming Le Sange's elusive presence and suggesting his involvement in the ongoing schemes.

Barbara recounts Catherine's ties to Le Sange, furthering the sense that the mind-control project runs deeper than anyone realized. The group moves toward the university for answers, and the mystery of John’s paternity resurfaces in the conversation.

In a chamber at the university, Gwen and Le Sange attempt to control Pete through mind manipulation. Pete slashes his own wrists and then stabs Le Sange in the throat, declaring Le Sange his father. Police arrive and Gwen is arrested, ending the primary danger.

Some time later, Pete, healed from the experiments, attends his father’s wedding to Barbara, with Caroline by his side. The ritual of normal life attempts to reclaim the town, even as the scars of the mind-control scheme linger.
