Roy Fairfax arrives in the quiet village of Slipfold to seek permission from Jennifer's uncle to marry her. He causes a commotion on the village street when his new motorcar spooks Arthur Peters' horse. Roy visits Jennifer at her home to propose a drive and presents a watch as a substitute engagement token.

While driving through Slipfold, Roy's car stalls after about fifteen minutes, and the watch he gives Jennifer also stops. The dual failure threatens Roy's attempt to maintain Fairfax & Sons' reputation. The spooked horse incident foreshadows the strange powers surrounding Jennifer.
