Dream for an Insomniac

Frankie [Ione Skye] works at her Uncle Leo’s Cafe Blue Eyes in San Francisco, a place named in honor of a family friend Frank Sinatra, and she longs to meet her ideal lover with blue eyes like Sinatra while tagging along on auditions with her Allison friend. The city’s night air becomes their stage as Frankie roams between dream and reality, hoping the right person will step into the neon glow of her life.

Frankie suffers from insomnia, and she has not slept through the night since childhood, when her parents were killed in a car accident. She spends many late hours reading, letting pages and ideas cradle her thoughts as fear and fatigue drift away with the dawn. Her nights are heavy with quiet rituals, and reading becomes both refuge and ritual.

Writer David Shrader takes a job at the cafe, and Frankie falls in love with him. As he tries to help cure her insomnia, she reads his writings, and the two of them take turns reciting philosophical quotes and guessing their sources, building a bond that feels tethered to something larger than themselves. Their conversations braid literature, philosophy, and a growing tenderness that brightens the otherwise grayscale world around them.

The film begins in black and white, a visual tone that mirrors Frankie’s night-born sensibilities, until the moment she sees David, and the movie shifts to color as his blue eyes come into focus. David’s presence complicates Frankie’s hopeful fantasy when she learns he is engaged to a lawyer, Molly, [Leslie Stevens], but the emotional pull between Frankie and David proves stronger than the promise of his engagement. He ultimately chooses Frankie, and travels to Los Angeles to be with her, where she has joined Allison, who is pursuing an acting career. The story finds its warmth and gravity in their evolving relationship, captured in intimate moments and the color that gradually brightens their world. The culmination is a quiet, intimate confession and a peaceful, shared surrender to sleep.

A secondary thread follows Rob, Leo’s gay son, who tries to convince his father that he is straight with the help of Allison acting as his girlfriend. This subplot threads through the main romance, offering a contrast between appearance and truth, family, acceptance, and the quiet bravery it takes for Rob to live openly. After Allison and Frankie leave the scene, Rob finally comes out to his father, who had known and accepted Rob’s truth for many years, adding a resolved note to the film’s delicate balance of longing and honesty. The ending lingers on understanding, connection, and the comforting certainty of being seen.

In the end, Frankie falls asleep in David’s arms, a simple, peaceful closing image that feels earned after a night filled with words, color, and stay-awake dreams.
