In the 23rd century, Earth falls under the control of the United Citizen Federation, a stratocratic regime founded by military veterans. This new system enforces a society where citizenship is granted only to those who have served in the military, impacting the freedoms and rights available to non-citizens and solidifying the importance of collective duty.

As humanity expands into space, they encounter the Arachnids, a ruthless insectoid race from the distant planet Klendathu. The conflict arises as humans encroach upon Arachnid territory, leading to the Bugs retaliating by launching meteors toward Earth, indicating the beginning of a dire confrontation.

In Buenos Aires, John 'Johnny' Rico, alongside his girlfriend Carmen and best friend Carl, navigates the challenges of high school. Their dynamic evolves as they aspire to join Fleet Academy, whilst navigating personal relationships, particularly Rico's unreciprocated interest from Isabel 'Dizzy' Flores.

The trio attends Fleet Academy where they are tested rigorously. Carmen excels in her studies, achieving a 97% on her math test, while Rico struggles with a mere 35%, highlighting their differing capabilities and setting the stage for their respective futures.

Rico's parents express concern for his determination to join the military, urging him to pursue a traditional education at Harvard. They tempt him with promises of a luxurious lifestyle, yet Rico wishes to carve his own path, yearning for independence and a sense of self.

At a graduation party, teacher Jean Rasczak imparts valuable life lessons that resonate with the students. The friends decide to enlist in the Federal Service, solidifying their bond and commitment to a military life, despite Rico's unreturned affections for Carmen.
