Squanto: A Warrior’s Tale

In the early 17th century, a Patuxet tribesman, Squanto, Adam Beach, is kidnapped by English sailors and taken across the ocean to England, along with Epenow, Eric Schweig, a Nauset from Martha’s Vineyard who shares the same fate. Their journey begins as slaves under the watchful eye of the crew’s employer, the imposing Sir George, Michael Gambon, who treats them as bargaining chips rather than people.

When the vessel finally reaches Plymouth, Squanto and Epenow are forced into servitude, their fates tied to Sir George’s ambitions. In a brutal initiation, Squanto is thrust into a ring with a towering Grizzly bear. The spectacle draws a wide crowd, yet the moment turns when Squanto, with quiet resolve, sings a Patuxet lullaby to the ferocious animal, soothing it into a peaceful slumber. The astonished onlookers, including Sir George, witness a remarkable turn of events, and the opportunity to flee presents itself. Seizing the chance, Squanto escapes in a rowboat and disappears into the open sea, only to be found later unconscious on a rocky shore by three monks who have been fishing.

Taken into a monastery, Squanto’s arrival unsettles the head monk, Brother Paul, but the monk who opens his arms the most is Brother Daniel, Mandy Patinkin. Under Daniel’s mentorship, Squanto l earn* English* and, in return, he teaches the monks about his world—sharing ideas about moccasins and popcorn that fascinate the brothers. The other monks remain wary of what they call “the pagan” influence, but Brother Daniel offers a bridge between cultures, while Brother Paul remains skeptical about possible harmony in a “New World.”

Meanwhile, Sir George pursues his prize, insisting that Squanto is the property of the Plymouth shipping venture. He dispatches men to raid the monastery, hoping to reclaim the captive. After Squanto is hidden away, Brother Paul grants permission for Brother Daniel to take him to a ship in London that is due to sail in fifteen days. In a tense moment of moral conflict, Squanto spots Epenow again in Sir George’s arena and makes a perilous attempt to rescue him, only to be captured once more. A dramatic escape soon follows, and Squanto joins a crew determined to return across the Atlantic to America, this time with Epenow—who has claimed there is gold to be found.

Back in the New World, Squanto and Epenow are welcomed by Pequod (the next generation of Epenow’s kin), Mark Abbott, and his people to celebrate a homecoming. But the mood shifts as the English ship is set ablaze and the crew are left at the mercy of the local tribe. Through Epenow’s evolving view of the English—shaped by greed and betrayal—the pair’s bond under pressure becomes clear. Squanto ultimately returns to his village only to discover a devastating scene: his entire tribe, including his wife Nakooma, Irene Bedard, has fallen to illnesses brought by the colonizers.

When the Pilgrim settlers arrive, the Nauset tribe braces for conflict. Bradford, Tim Hopper, listens to the faint voice of peace as he overhears the settlers’ leader’s reluctance to fight. Squanto steps forward, aiming to broker a peaceful accord between his people and the newcomers. The moment is tense as Pequod charges forward and is injured, yet Epenow contemplates mercy, allowing the colony’s doctor to treat him. Throughout the night, both sides pray in their own languages, a quiet testament to a fragile coexistence. By morning, when Pequod regains consciousness, the tribe’s stance shifts away from aggression, and the Nauset choose to depart peacefully.

In the end, the film crescendos into a scene of shared gratitude and a hopeful pause in history, as both communities acknowledge their wounds and look toward a tenuous future together. The final frames honor the long arc of reconciliation and memory, echoing the spirit of the era and the beginnings of a new, complicated relationship between Native peoples and European settlers—the first Thanksgiving marking a hopeful, if uneasy, milestone in this complex story.
