Clarissa, the wife of a Foreign Office diplomat, spends much of her time lost in frivolous daydreams. She often muses, “What would I do if I woke up and found a dead body in the library?” Her imagination becomes reality when she discovers a corpse lying in the drawing‑room of her Kent home, thrusting her into a bewildering mystery.
