Consulting detective Holmes fakes his own death in Scotland to probe a string of bizarre apparent suicides, convinced they are part of an elaborate plot by a “female Moriarty.” Returning to his assistant Watson in secret, he notes that all the victims are wealthy gamblers and begins tailing London’s gaming clubs, where wealth and risk mingle in the shadows.
Disguised as Rajni Singh, a distinguished Indian officer, he moves through the clubs with careful patience, watching how a formidable mastermind named Adrea Spedding targets vulnerable men, persuading them to pawn their life insurance policies before ending their lives. Holmes sets himself up as her next would-be mark, uncovering that she wields a deadly weapon: the spider Lycosa carnivora, whose venom inflicts such unbearable pain that it drives victims to suicide. A peculiar clue sits nearby as well—a tiny footprint left in the dust, hinting at something or someone beyond ordinary human reach.
To unlock the mystery, Holmes and [Watson] must track down the source of the arachnids. They visit the eminent arachnologist Matthew Ordway, a man who might have supplied the venomous creatures. Holmes quickly realizes that the man he speaks to is an impostor, yet the faker escapes, leaving behind the corpse of the real Ordway and his journals. The journals hint at a Central African entity immune to the spider venom, a revelation that deepens the mystery and points toward a hidden force behind the scheme. The journals also reveal a model skeleton of a child, a clue that shakes Holmes’ understanding of the danger at play.
The investigation leads them to a bustling fairground, where Holmes lets himself fall into Spedding’s trap. Bound and gagged, he is strapped behind a moving target in a shooting gallery while Lestrade and Watson take aim with a .22 rifle. In a deft escape, Holmes breaks free, and the police descend on the scene, arresting Spedding, her gang, and the pygmy associate who has been aiding the operation.
In a quiet moment of mutual respect, Holmes chooses mercy over humiliation, telling Lestrade to spare Spedding the indignity of handcuffs, and remarking that “she’ll go quietly.” Spedding, recognizing the measure of Holmes’s intellect, smiles gratefully as she is led away.
she’ll go quietly.
