Sivadhanu is an unemployed post-graduate and the eldest son in a poor family, bearing the heavy responsibility of arranging his sister Lakshmi’s wedding and looking after his two younger brothers. He moves through a world where dignity often clashes with hardship, and his days are spent trying to balance duty with a stubborn sense of self-respect.
A wealthy Mayavaram businessman named Chokkalingam notices him at the market while waiting for Chidambaram Mudhaliar, and something about Sivadhanu’s genuineness and energy stays with him. He approaches Sivadhanu’s family with an offer that would change the course of their lives: Sivadhanu would marry his elder daughter, Parvathi, and become the son-in-law who would help run his businesses. Though Sivadhanu is hesitant about living in his in-laws’ house after marriage, Mudhaliar convinces both him and his family that this alliance could also secure him a job.
Soon after moving in, Sivadhanu finds his independence slipping away. He is treated more like a servant than a son-in-law and is forced to manage Chokkalingam’s restaurant, a responsibility he never asked for. His friend Panneer witnesses a moment of public humiliation, when Chokkalingam berates him for his decisions. Panneer bluntly remarks that the poor should not wed into wealth expecting equality, for in-laws often treat them as inferiors. Sivadhanu discovers that his father-in-law has even advised one of his relatives, P. D. Elangovan MP, not to back Sivadhanu’s bid for a government job he had hoped to secure. When Sivadhanu’s brother visits to share Lakshmi’s potential groom, the in-laws mock their poverty, cutting deep into Sivadhanu’s aching sense of dignity. Unable to bear the humiliation, he returns home, only to be persuaded by Mudhaliar to try again.
Back with renewed resolve, Sivadhanu soothes Parvathi when she contemplates leaving him uninformed, and is overjoyed when he receives an appointment letter from NLC as a geologist. He leaves to join the job despite Chokkalingam’s resistance, stepping into a future that promises stability but not necessarily happiness.
A few months pass and Parvathi becomes pregnant while Sivadhanu quietly arranges Lakshmi’s marriage. When he tries to bring Parvathi home a few days before the wedding, her parents refuse to send her, citing health reasons. The distance grows as Sivadhanu becomes consumed by work, and a baby girl is born. He arranges a place in staff quarters and asks Parvathi to join him in Neyveli, but she refuses once more, which fuels his anger. Chokkalingam lashes out, beating Sivadhanu and casting him out, leaving him crushed and humiliated at the threshold of his own home.
Mudhaliar returns in an attempt to mend fences, but Sivadhanu refuses to rejoin a life that has repeatedly mocked their poverty. Time passes, and Sivadhanu petitions for a transfer to Dhanbad, a move that saddens his family. The family’s hopes are raised again when a wedding near Parvathi’s home becomes a chance for reconciliation: Sivadhanu’s close friend Pokkiri’s wedding draws him near Parvathi’s house. He cannot resist the pull of his little daughter Madhavi’s cry, and he quickens his pace away from the ceremony, overwhelmed by longing.
When Parvathi learns that Sivadhanu has appeared near the wedding, she experiences a decisive shift. She runs to reunite with him, her resolve strengthened by a belief that their bond matters more than her father’s opinions. In that moment, they stand together, choosing to pursue their own path as a united pair, determined to redefine what family means beyond the constraints of wealth and pride.
