Small Island

The story centers on four main characters: Hortense, Naomie Harris; Queenie, Ruth Wilson; Gilbert, David Oyeloyo; and Bernard, Benedict Cumberbatch, tracing the Jamaican diaspora during and after World War II as they move to England, the Mother Country, in search of a better life but soon face prejudice and exclusion in their new home.

In the opening, the young Hortense dreams in vivid detail about three goals: to marry Michael, Ashley Walters; to travel to faraway England; and to become a teacher, a path that seems hopeful yet heavy with responsibility.

The narrative then shifts to London, where Queenie and Bernard’s lives unfold against a backdrop of ordinary working-class struggles. Queenie, a girl from Yorkshire who longs for more than her family’s pig-farming life, is taken in by an aunt in the city and starts working in a shop. When her aunt dies, she marries the well-to-do Bernard Bligh not for love but to avoid returning to the farm—yet their union is never simple, especially as World War II begins to tilt their fate.

World War II uproots everything for them. Michael leaves Jamaica after a scandal and joins the Royal Air Force, while Bernard also volunteers, leaving Queenie to care for his shell-shocked father. During the war, Queenie rents out her home to soldiers; one night, three airmen arrive, including a black Jamaican named Michael Ashley Walters. The mood shifts as Hortense, overwhelmed by Michael’s departure, rushes to greet a man who seems to be him, only to discover it is actually Gilbert Joseph, a man who bears a striking resemblance to Michael.

The story then follows Gilbert’s wartime experiences. He enlists in the RAF and, while stationed in Yorkshire, meets Queenie, who initially mistakes him for Michael. Their growing friendship is tested when American soldiers react with hostility toward Gilbert, culminating in a fight that leaves several lives changed—most notably when a stray bullet takes the life of Queenie’s father-in-law.

After the war, Gilbert returns to Jamaica, where opportunities are scarce and the longing for England lingers. He hopes to return, but the fare is beyond him. He crosses paths again with Hortense, and their shared history deepens as Hortense offers him money for the voyage on one condition: that he marry her and send for her once he has work and a settled home. They lodge with Queenie Bligh, and both women carry the weight of unfulfilled loves and difficult marriages. The two women share a secret none of them fully understands, rooted in the past they’ve tried to forget.

Hortense and Gilbert’s complicated relationship unfolds against the harshness of racism and ignorance in England. Yet through adversity, they discover new strengths in each other and, slowly, a fragile love begins to grow.

Queenie’s life takes another turn when Bernard returns after years away. She gives birth to a dark-skinned baby—the baby’s true father is Michael—and she names him Michael. Bernard, despite his prejudice, offers to raise the child with Queenie, but she refuses to let him shoulder the blame for a life shaped by injustice. She instead persuades Hortense and Gilbert to take the baby with them as they seek a new future, leaving behind a painful but hopeful farewell in which Queenie provides the Josephs with a photograph of herself and a little money to help the child start anew.

The film then leaps forward to the present day. Queenie and Michael’s baby, now grown and with grandchildren of his own, serves as the narrator of the family’s tale. As one of his grandchildren studies a photo of Queenie, he asks who she is. The answer is bittersweet and clear: she is his grandmother, a woman whose life threads through generations as a testament to memory, resilience, and the complicated paths that lead families home.
