Slam Dance

In the heart of Hollywood, where aspirations collide with reality, we meet Charles C. “Drood” Drood (Tom Hulce), a cartoonist hustling to make ends meet. Exhausted from a long night of work, he falls asleep only to be woken by a furious call from his ex-wife, Helen (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio), who reminds him he’s forgotten to pick up their young daughter, Elizabeth “Bean” Brood (Judith Barsi). Meanwhile, he faces pressure from his boss, who threatens him with termination if he doesn’t complete his tasks soon. Just as his troubles heighten, his friend Jim Campbell (Adam Ant), excitedly informs him that he sold one of the pieces he created and has earned a cool $500 in commission.

When Charles confronts Helen, he nervously prompts her to consider moving in with him again, reflecting his uncertainty about their impending divorce. Though their history looms over them, she likely declines his offer, leaving him distressed. At Bean’s school, he briefly interacts with her during recess, catching the attention of one of her teachers, Mrs. Margaret Bell ([Rosalind Chao]), who finds him amusing.

Tragedy strikes when some thugs forcibly grab Charles, imposing demands on him that he cannot comprehend. Following this harrowing encounter, he seeks help from the police, only to find they suspect him of something nefarious tied to a young woman named Yolanda Caldwell (Virginia Madsen). When shown a photo of her deceased, he is reminded of their passionate affair, but he brushes off any implications of wrongdoing.

As the story unfolds, his life spirals further into chaos. After being assaulted, Charles receives an enigmatic package from his landlady, Mrs. Raines ([Herta Ware]), containing a provocative photograph of Yolanda, which causes trouble to escalate. His apartment is ransacked, revealing a desperate scramble for that very photograph. Reflecting on happier times during a picnic with Bean, he recognizes how far he has fallen as Helen expresses concern over the intrusion.

Despite his faded optimism, Charles returns to his art, yet the allure of the local pub pulls him back into a self-destructive cycle. He drinks excessively and is confronted again by the thug who earlier vandalized his home. His attempts to piece together Yolanda’s final days lead him to gather intel from Jim and to the morgue, where his grasp on reality weakens.

In his downward spiral, he reluctantly speaks with Shelly, a secretary who blurs the lines between professionalism and compromise. Just as he begins to unearth the name “Nancy,” he is interrupted by Helen and Bean’s unexpected arrival — a confrontation that escalates further as misunderstandings unfold.

The tension mounts when he discovers Shelly has been murdered, prompting him to dive deeper into the web of corruption, deceit, and betrayal surrounding Yolanda’s life — even tying back to a city hall scandal involving Bobby Nye (Millie Perkins). Amidst disguises and near captures, Drood learns that his life is perilously intertwined with a police department eager to pin the crimes on him.

As the climax builds, their paths intersect tragically, leading to a confrontation where love, fear, and desperation collide. In a wild twist, Charles concocts a plan that involves him disguising himself as a deceased detective, integrating himself back into his life in a way that is both tragic and desperate.
