Sinister

The film opens with disturbing Super 8 footage depicting a family of four standing under a tree. They are hanged in a gruesome scene as an unseen figure saws through a limb, foreshadowing the horror that is to follow.

Months after the horrifying incident, Ellison Oswalt, a struggling true crime writer, moves with his wife Tracy and children, Ashley and Trevor, to the house where the murders took place. Unbeknownst to his family, Ellison plans to write a book about the gruesome events.

Upon settling into their new home, Trevor begins to have night terrors, indicating the malevolent presence in the house. Ellison encourages his daughter Ashley's artistic endeavors, allowing her to paint on the walls, which becomes relevant later.

While exploring the attic, Ellison finds a box containing a projector and several reels of film purportedly home movies. As he views the footage, he is horrified to see various families brutally murdered, which shocks him deeply and prompts further investigation.

In one of the films, Ellison is particularly haunted by an ominous figure he identifies as Mr. Boogie, lurking at the bottom of a pool. This figure appears repeatedly in the gruesome footage, marking Ellison's descent into terror.

In search of answers, Ellison speaks with a local deputy who provides unsettling information about the films. He learns that the murders span decades and centers on children disappearing after their families are killed.

The deputy directs Ellison to Professor Jonas, who specializes in the occult. Jonas explains the significance of the symbols in the footage, revealing that they correlate with Bughuul, a demonic deity known for consuming the souls of children.

One night, the projector inexplicably turns on, drawing Ellison to the attic. He is horrified to find evidence of the missing children watching the films, pushing him to destroy the projector in a desperate attempt to break the curse.

After deciding to leave, Ellison and his family return to their former residence. However, he receives a warning from Professor Jonas regarding the dire connection between their current address and the previous murders.

Ellison discovers the projector containing new footage that includes extended endings of the previous films. As he experiments with the footage, he receives alarming calls from the deputy, which reveals the dark connection of their new home to the past.

Chaos ensues when Ellison wakes up to find his family bound and gagged, with Ashley now wielding an axe. Her intent to revive her father's fame takes a dark turn as she commits gruesome acts, illustrating an alarming shift in her character.

As Ashley completes her bloody artwork, she inadvertently invokes Bughuul's presence. In a horrific culmination, the children from the past are seen watching, as Bughuul claims Ashley, sealing her fate and the Oswalt family’s doom.

The film concludes with a haunting revelation as the box of films reappears in the attic. A new reel titled 'House Painting '12' ominously hints that the cycle of horror is far from over, and the audience now becomes the next target of Bughuul.
