Sing a Song of Sex

Against the backdrop of a snowy Tokyo day in February 1967, four restless high school students arrive to take their university entrance exams, carrying more than just academic pressure. Nakamura, Ueda, Hiroi, and Maruyama navigate a landscape of teenage bravado and simmering anxieties, their focus drifting far from the test papers before them. Japan's newly established National Foundation Day frames their journey, a holiday that stirs political demonstrations the boys openly mock—a telling indifference that reveals their disconnection from the world's larger concerns.

During the exam, one boy notices a beautiful girl known only by her seat number, and this mysterious figure quickly becomes an obsession for all four. Their conversations swirl with curiosity and darker fantasies, youthful desires twisting into something more unsettling. The fixation on "Number 469" exposes the raw, uncomfortable terrain between adolescent longing and the boundaries they have yet to understand or respect.

Their path crosses with Ōtake, a drunken teacher who launches into bawdy drinking songs at a restaurant, boldly declaring that such songs carry the voices of the oppressed. This unexpected philosophy seeps into the boys' psyches, the ribald tune becoming an unlikely anthem for their rebellion. The refrain threads through their day, coloring every encounter with a strange mix of liberation and foreboding.
