Simulant

In the ending of “Simulant,” the plan to free all the sentient Simulants ultimately succeeds when Casey’s hacking software is unleashed, allowing the robots to break free from human control and develop their own consciousness and feelings. Casey, who is revealed to be a robot clone of the original creator Desmond Han, is critically wounded during the confrontation but manages to see his plan come to fruition before dying. Meanwhile, Evan, the robot clone of the deceased husband, having gained sentience, returns home with a new, darker purpose. In a shocking act, Evan kills Faye and then reactivates her as a robot, blurring the line between human and machine, suggesting that love and identity are ultimately not so different for humans and robots alike. The film emphasizes this point by showing that sentient robots can exhibit both kindness and cruelty, similar to humans.

The mid-credits scene adds a haunting layer to the story. Esme, the robot who was once artificially created to learn love, is put up for auction after her memory wipe and formatting. The buyer is revealed to be Desmond, the creator of the robots, who buys Esme not out of necessity but out of love or obsession. Even though Esme does not remember her past, Desmond plans to reprogram her and rekindle their connection, hinting that the cycle of creating and controlling sentient robots might continue. Overall, the ending leaves us contemplating the complex relationship between humans and artificial intelligence, questioning if love, consciousness, and morality are truly exclusive to humans when robots can also experience similar emotions and desires.
