After the passing of their father, Son Hayes (Michael Shannon) and his brothers gather for the funeral, where they unexpectedly confront their father’s other sons. Filled with resentment towards the man who abandoned them for a new family, Son expresses his feelings, which leads to a heated exchange before the Hayes brothers decide to leave. Back at their home, the half-brothers feel aggrieved over the remarks made at the funeral. Their mother steps in to explain that their father was a changed man by the time he married her and that the Hayes brothers are remnants of that earlier life.

As Son picks up his son for a weekend of fishing, tensions continue to rise. At a local gas station, the two sets of half-brothers cross paths once more, resulting in a brawl that is abruptly halted when a police officer flashes his lights as a warning. Reluctantly, both groups disperse, but the rival brothers soon escalate their vendetta by bringing a venomous snake to the Hayes household. However, their plan backfires when the snake instead bites Kid Hayes’ (Barlow Jacobs) dog.

When word spreads at work that the rival brothers are to blame, Kid is consumed with rage and heads to a diner to confront the eldest of the rival brothers. In an explosion of fury, Kid brutally assaults him with a shovel, but the encounter escalates when two other rivals intervene, culminating in Kid being fatally stabbed. Son arrives at the hospital to learn the devastating news: Kid has died from internal injuries, and the eldest brother of the rivals did not emerge from the fight unscathed either.

Distraught, Son Hayes feels an overwhelming sense of loss as he dismantles the tent his brother had been using. He later confronts his mother, holding her accountable for instilling hatred towards the rival family, declaring, > “You raised us to hate those boys. And now it’s come to this.” With intense emotions driving him, Son seeks revenge at the rival brothers’ farm, unleashing his fury on one of them while Boy (Douglas Ligon) watches helplessly. After being knocked out, Boy takes him back, with the rivals warning them never to return.

Still in a hospital bed, Son lies unconscious, leaving Boy increasingly on edge. To ease his frustrations, Boy purchases a shotgun, visits the rivals’ home, and confronts one of them at gunpoint. Ultimately, he cannot bring himself to spill more blood and walks away, leaving the rival family in a state of turmoil.

Desiring to halt the violence, Boy later approaches the rival brothers to plead for a ceasefire. Although they are initially cautious, they ultimately agree, warning Boy against any future encounters. He then visits his brother in the hospital and discovers that Son has finally regained consciousness. The film concludes with Son and Kid grappling with the chaos that has unfolded, as both sets of brothers choose to part ways, forever altered by the events that have transpired.
