The film opens with Jess, a young blonde woman, enjoying a blissful day in the water. Her playful boyfriend, Keith, adds to her joy by lifting her onto his shoulders, showcasing their affectionate relationship.

As Keith retreats to their trailer to grab some food, Jess feels an alarming presence in the water. Suddenly, she is violently pulled underwater by a shark, leaving her to scream in silence as Keith remains completely unaware of the horror unfolding beneath the surface.

The narrative shifts to a group of seven university students from Tulane, including Sara, Nick, and Malik, as they journey to Sara's family vacation house. Their arrival at the secluded Lake Pontchartrain sets the stage for their fateful adventure.

At a local bait shop, the group encounters Dennis, Sara's old flame, and his friend Red. The situation escalates as racial slurs are exchanged, but Sara intervenes to defuse the tension, illustrating the underlying prejudices in their interactions.

As the group heads out on a speedboat, they draw the attention of Sheriff Sabin. Initially showing a stern demeanor, he surprises them by joining for a beer and welcomes Sara back to the area after several years.

The playful mood rapidly shifts when Malik is targeted by a shark while water-skiing. Despite frantic rescue efforts by his friends, he is severely injured and loses an arm, marking the beginning of their horrific struggle for survival.

With Malik's injury causing blood to flow into the water, their boat is soon attacked by a shark, resulting in chaos. In the ensuing panic, Maya is thrown overboard and tragically consumed by the predator, escalating the terror that envelops the group.

After their boat crashes, Sara, Nick, and Malik find themselves stranded on the shore. With no cell service or landlines to call for help, tensions rise as they grapple with their dire predicament.
