A group of divers sets out to recover gold from a sunken ship, venturing into dangerous depths in search of treasure. The expedition centers on Jimmy Wagner Dean Cochran and his father, but a brutal encounter with a school of great white sharks leaves the elder diver dead and Jimmy as the lone survivor. Ten years later, he is married to Carrie Wagner Brandi Sherwood, and they have a son, Danny Luke Leavitt, though he remains haunted by his father’s death and clings to a growing fear of sharks.
A man named Volkoff [Velizar Binev] approaches Jimmy with a proposal to search for gold in the same ship, but Jimmy declines. The town mayor John Cortell [Alan Austin] asks him to patrol the beaches for sharks ahead of an upcoming beach party, and he agrees to help. Soon, he witnesses a shark attack that claims several lives, casting a shadow over the town and its celebrations.
Assigned to kill the sharks, Jimmy and a group of his diver friends go shark hunting to end the threat, but the predators strike back and slaughter everyone except Jimmy. At a party, two young adults are eaten, and Jimmy rejects Volkoff’s latest entreaty. He and one of his partners return to patrol the beaches, and after another shark attack claims three teenagers, their partner manages to tag one of the sharks with a tracking device.
Using the tracking device, they locate the sharks and blow several of them up with bombs from a helicopter. Jimmy remains unsure whether all the predators are dead, and Volkoff quietly pressures him to meet in private for a final discussion.
Volkoff again asks Jimmy to help locate the ship, but he refuses. In retaliation, Volkoff’s henchmen kidnap Danny, forcing Jimmy to come aboard the boat where Volkoff and Danny are held. Jimmy helps three of Volkoff’s men locate the ship, though they are quickly killed by sharks. Jimmy and another henchman press on; Jimmy stabs the henchman during a tense sequence and returns to the ship to confront Volkoff. During the fight, an electric cable is damaged, causing a fire and trapping Danny, while Jimmy is shot but continues to fight. He gains the upper hand and knocks Volkoff overboard, where he is eaten by the sharks.
Jimmy rescues Danny, and the two escape in a motorboat as the ship explodes. They make it back to the mainland and reunite with Carrie, their nerves alive with shared relief and a renewed sense of family after a harrowing ordeal.
