A crippled kabuki actor joins a wandering troupe of itinerant performers. His bold drawings catch the eye of an influential publisher, who backs him despite persecution and betrayal. The film examines the dynamic between artist and patron while charting the protagonist’s struggle for emancipation from the power and money that seek to control him.
