Shades of Ray

Ray Rehman [Zachary Levi] is a half-American, half-Pakistani man in his mid-twenties who has moved to Los Angeles from New Jersey to chase an acting career. He spends his days auditioning for parts and his nights pouring drinks as a bartender, all while sharing a small apartment with his lifelong best friend, Sal Garfinkle [Fran Kranz]. Ray’s upbringing under his father’s watchful eye planted a clear path: marry a Pakistani woman and live by a traditional Muslim code. Yet Ray walks a different line, dating mostly white women and embracing only a loose sense of Muslim identity. He also keeps up appearances for his father—leading him to believe he works as an investment banker—while his mother holds the full truth about his career and love life.

When Ray proposes to his girlfriend, Noelle Wilson [Bonnie Somerville], she gives him a hopeful but cautious reply: she wants to say yes, but first she needs to secure her parents’ blessing after a family vacation. Ray feels a glow of optimism, even as doubts linger beneath the surface. One evening, he comes home to find his father waiting on the porch after traveling from New Jersey. The revelation that Ray’s mother has kicked his father out sets a tense tone, and Ray begs for reconciliation between his parents. His father proposes a compromise: Ray must meet the daughter of one of his Pakistani friends living in Los Angeles. Irritated but curious, Ray agrees, uncertain of what fate has in store.

During the dinner, the assembled group includes Ray, his father, Sana Khaliq [Sarah Shahi] and her parents. Ray and Sana discover an immediate and surprising bond, not only through shared laughter and easy conversation but also through their shared mixed heritage—half-white, half-Pakistani roots that give them a sense of kinship they haven’t found with others. By the end of the evening, Ray’s father notes that Ray seems drawn to Sana, a development that confuses Ray even as he admits to his father that he has already proposed to Noelle and is awaiting her final answer. The spark between Ray and Sana deepens, and a chance encounter in a bookstore reinforces their connection, revealing how two people with similar cultural upbringings can understand one another in a way others cannot.

Meanwhile, Noelle calls Ray with surprising news: she’s tired of trying to please her parents and decides she will marry him, to Ray’s delight. The favorable turn of events is tempered by the growing complexity at home. Ray’s parents carry on a fragile, sometimes heated dialogue about reconciliation, and the mother’s arrival at Ray’s doorstep adds another layer of tension. The family tries to move toward harmony, but the truth about Ray’s involvement with Sana burdens the moment, and Ray receives a text from Sana that nudges him toward meeting her again.

Ray’s mother offers a heartfelt apology, acknowledging that she may have discouraged him from seeking a partner who felt more like him. They share a hug, and Ray heads off to work, only for Noelle to show up at the same time and reveal that Ray works at a bar, a detail that infuriates his father. In the midst of the workday, Sana visits Ray: she’sTipsy and flirtatious, inviting him to take a break. She pulls him into the men’s bathroom and presses for closeness, and though Ray initially resists, he ultimately gives in to a kiss. In a moment of shock and honesty, he blurts out, and then retracts, the pivotal line: > I’m engaged. <

The revelation shakes everyone. Ray confronts the consequences of trying to live up to his father’s expectations—whether it’s chasing money, success, or a marriage that looks right on paper. He accuses his father of hypocrisy for not adhering to those same rules himself, a clash that lands with emotional weight. After a difficult confrontation, Noelle arrives at Ray’s place, and he reassures her that nothing physical happened with Sana. He commits to ending the entanglement and agrees to move forward with Noelle, with the understanding that they will not dwell on the past.

Yet the story doesn’t end there. Ray seeks clarity and counsel from his friend Sal about fate and free will, and Sal’s pragmatic faith in choice motivates a turning point: Ray decides to end his engagement with Noelle, choosing a path that feels truer to him. Three months pass, and Sana—who has a weekend off—stops by with a sombrero she brought back from Mexico. They reconnect with warmth and a sense of possibility, and they share a quiet, hopeful lunch that suggests a new beginning built on honesty, mutual understanding, and a willingness to redefine what family and love can mean.

The film explores identity, family pressures, and the pull between tradition and personal happiness with a balanced, measured tone. It foregrounds Ray’s struggle to reconcile his cultural heritage with his own desires, while also allowing Sana to stand as a companion who understands him in ways no one else does. The interplay between Ray, Sana, Noelle, and Ray’s parents creates a web of choices, missteps, and reconciliations that feel both intimate and universal, painting a portrait of a young man navigating love, loyalty, and the status quo in a city that prides itself on new beginnings.
