Antoine Doinel, now a young man, faces life after being discharged from the army as unfit. He spends his days reading novels and writing to his sweetheart, Christine Darbon, a violinist, rather than following orders. He fills her inbox with long letters—sometimes more than once a day—but Christine never replies.
Christine is away skiing with friends when Antoine shows up at her house, and her parents step in to host him. They’re pleased to see him and soon learn that he needs work. Christine’s parents help him land a job as a night clerk at the Hôtel Alsina, where he mostly hides away with a book between shifts. When Christine visits, the two can’t help but reconnect after such a long separation, and it seems as if their old bond might rekindle despite the time apart. Yet the rhythm of life soon sends them in different directions, testing the limits of their relationship.
One morning, a man accompanied by a private detective arrives at Antoine’s workplace, claiming a need to uncover why a particular room has been repeatedly disturbed. The room’s occupant is a woman who turns out to be the man’s wife, found in bed with someone else. The husband’s outburst leaves the room in shambles, and to everyone’s surprise, Antoine is blamed for the chaos and loses his job. Ironically, this fiasco becomes a turning point: he later befriends the detective and is hired to work at the latter’s agency, learning the tricks of the trade and stepping into a world of surveillance and curious assignments.
On a routine assignment, Antoine runs into Colette, the woman who once sparked a fascination during his youth, now married to Albert Tazzi and with a child. The encounter underscores the conflicts between his romantic ideals and the practical demands of following people without tipping into obsession. The job pressures start to pull him away from Christine, as he struggles to balance paying attention to others with staying true to his own needs.
Georges Tabard, the owner of a shoe store, visits the agency to understand why no one seems to like him. Though he’s never worked in retail and is clumsy by nature, Antoine agrees to pose as a stock boy to solve the mystery surrounding Georges’s reputation. In the process, he becomes entangled with Georges’s wife, Fabienne, who seduces him. The attraction grows into a tangible temptation, and Antoine, feeling his romance with Christine slipping further away, ends their relationship, telling Christine that he has never “admired” her in the way he now admires Fabienne. The agency soon suspects Fabienne’s fidelity to her husband’s client, forcing Antoine to confess. The double life takes its toll: the same day he’s compelled to tell the truth, his detective mentor dies, leaving Antoine to navigate the consequences on his own.
Antoine’s path then veers toward a more ordinary, domestic line of work as a TV repairman. He avoids Christine, but fate (and Christine’s own scheming) intervenes: a fender-bender with Christine’s father’s car is inconsequential, and the elder man forgives him. Later, Christine deliberately disables her TV and calls Antoine’s repair service for a fix, knowing his inexperience will stretch the visit. When he arrives, he struggles with a tube replacement and takes much longer than expected, slyly highlighting his limitations; Christine uses this moment to reconnect, and the two eventually reconcile. They sleep together, and the next morning, Antoine, without a word, proposes, and Christine accepts.
As the couple walks through a park after their engagement, a man who has been trailing Christine for days declares his love, describing it as “permanent” and contrasting it with the “temporary” love of others. Christine dismisses him as possibly mad, while Antoine, reflecting on his own erratic behavior, recognizes the parallel. In shared silence, he concedes the truth in that comparison, acknowledging that his own heart has swung between certainty and doubt.
He must be.
The film traces the delicate balance between desire, commitment, and the imperfect choices people make as they search for lasting connection. It portrays Antoine’s ongoing struggle to align his romantic fantasies with the messy, real-world rhythms of life, love, and responsibility, all while navigating the shifting tides of a young man’s heart.
