Captain Soundarapandian, a terminally ill convict, is hospitalised and nearing death. He skillfully evades hospital security and escapes, setting his path toward the outside world. This breakout triggers a sequence of perilous events that pull him into the lives of Ashok and Ponni in Nilambur.

He arrives in Nilambur and immediately encounters Ashok and Ponni, who are running from danger. As they board a train together, Soundarapandian suffers a massive headache and faints on the railway track. Ashok dashes to his aid, pulling him away from the oncoming train, while Ponni is dragged off by pursuing goons.

With Ponni abducted, the remaining goons engage Ashok in a fight. Soundarapandian regains consciousness and uses his recovered strength to subdue the attackers. Ashok and his ally Gopal escort Soundarapandian to safety, away from the chaotic scene on the rails.

Ashok and Gopal take Soundarapandian to Ashok's shelter, where he rests guardedly. Gopal hints that he recognizes Soundarapandian but keeps quiet, respecting the man's guarded gestures. The trio begins to navigate the mystery surrounding Soundarapandian's identity.

Dr. Sundaramurthy, who tends to Soundarapandian, decides to locate his patient himself due to police ineffectiveness. He prepares to pursue leads beyond the hospital and city, driven by professional concern and personal urgency. This personal mission foreshadows a broader chase for the truth behind the dying man.

Ashok explains why the goons chased them: he came to Nilambur as a field officer and fell in love with Ponni after hearing her sing. Ponni's affection for Ashok becomes a catalyst for the village's trouble, drawing Ponnamma's jealousy and plots. The revelation deepens the romance while heightening the danger around them.

Ponni is the daughter of landlord Rajavelu. After his wife's death, Rajavelu marries Ponnamma, who torments Ponni in a bid to seize Ponni's wealth. Ponni's childhood marriage was arranged by Ponnamma, and after Rajavelu's death Ponni remains under Ponnamma's control as a widow.

As Ponni begins to feel for Ashok, Ponnamma discovers the truth and swears to separate them. Her scheming drives the conflict and heightens Ponni's peril as the lovers resist her control.

Soundarapandian's tale unfolds in nonlinear memory: he is shown as a soldier who, with a young teacher named Radha, jailed a local thug Udayappan, and later marries Radha. The memory frames his past and explains his deep ties to the village.

Years later, Udayappan escapes prison and murders Soundarapandian's wife, son, and the serving servant. Soundarapandian fights back and manages to kill Udayappan, though not before the villain deals him severe blows. The cycle of vengeance fuels Soundarapandian's return to Ponni's world.

The servant who becomes Ponni's stepbrother, Oomaiyan, dies after asking Soundarapandian to save Ponni from Ponnamma. This death deepens Soundarapandian's resolve to intervene in Ponni's fate and explains his sudden return to the village.

After failing to negotiate with Ponnamma, Soundarapandian plans a secret rescue of Ponni. The attempt goes awry and he is nearly killed, but Sundaramurthy arrives in time to save him, fueling the ongoing effort to protect Ponni.

On learning of Soundarapandian's critical condition, Ashok contemplates leaving Ponni and the village to secure his partner's treatment. He wrestles with this choice but gradually reconsiders his priorities as the crisis deepens.

Soundarapandian, Ashok, and Sundaramurthy mount one last bid to rescue Ponni. Ponni's father helps her escape and, in a final act, triggers the downfall of Ponnamma and her husband while he dies by suicide. The group escapes aboard a train, with Soundarapandian gravely injured but alive enough to continue the fight.
