After learning about the shedding procedure from Professor Albright, he chose to transfer his consciousness into a younger body as a desperate attempt to survive. He staged his own public death to facilitate a seamless transition into his new life.

Shedding is a radical medical procedure that transfers a person's consciousness into a fresh, younger body. The process effectively allows someone to cheat death by occupying a new physical form. However, the procedure requires the original personality to be suppressed through medication, and the process has significant side effects including hallucinations.

Professor Albright is actually Dr. Francis Jensen, a pioneer in transhumanism who performed the first shedding procedures. Jensen transferred his own consciousness into Albright's body and has been operating secretly for years. Damian discovers this by noticing a shared nervous tic between the two men and finding evidence linking Jensen to the procedure's development.

Damian notices Albright has a familiar tic that matches Jensen in old videos.

The pills are designed to erase the original personality of the body receiving the consciousness transfer. Without them, the original occupant's consciousness would gradually resurface, effectively drowning out the new personality. Albright uses them to ensure his clients remain who they think they are, or more accurately, who he wants them to be.

The hallucinations represent memories from the original consciousness of the body Damian now occupies, Mark. When Damian forgets to take his medication, Mark's suppressed memories begin surfacing, appearing as vivid visions of his wife Madeline and daughter Anna. This is why Albright insists on the medication; it keeps the original personality suppressed.

Mark sold his body to Albright to secure funding for his daughter Anna's life-saving medical treatment. Anna was severely ill, and the family had no way to pay for the expensive procedure she needed. By agreeing to become a shedding vessel, Mark essentially traded his physical existence for his daughter's survival.

Anton is not who Damian initially believes. Like Damian and Jensen, Anton has undergone multiple shedding procedures. He's one of Albright's henchmen who has shed his consciousness multiple times, entering different bodies as needed. This is how he appears alive again after being seemingly killed at the farmhouse, his consciousness simply moved to another vessel.

Damian deliberately stops taking his medication, allowing Mark's original consciousness to re-emerge. This is his final choice, he gives up his stolen life as Damian to restore Mark to his family. By surrendering the medication, Damian essentially sacrifices his own existence so that Mark can reunite with Madeline and Anna in the Caribbean.

Damian used several strategies: he stopped taking his medication to access Mark's memories and locate Jensen's lab, then masqueraded as Anton to infiltrate the operation. He hid a bullet casing in his mouth during the shedding process, causing a malfunction that destroyed Anton's consciousness. Meanwhile, Martin reverse-engineered the pills, giving Damian a way to counter Jensen's control. Finally, Damian set fire to the lab with Jensen inside.

Martin is Damian's old friend who initially refuses to believe the incredible story about consciousness transfer. However, after witnessing the reality of the situation, seeing the evidence of shedding and understanding the danger to Madeline and Anna, Martin agrees to help orchestrate their escape to the Caribbean. His change of heart represents the moral reckoning the story demands.

Damian visits his estranged daughter Claire before leaving, leaving her a letter that reconciles their relationship without revealing the truth about his current form. This scene shows that despite everything, despite being in a stolen body, Damian still carries his original emotions and relationships. His reconciliation with Claire represents closure with his past life.
