She calls the people she calls mermaids, though they love the water. At fourteen, Amanda is an excellent swimmer and top student. When the factory where her father works closes and he must move for a new job, she feels heart‑broken. She later meets the McReas, a kindly elderly couple who also cannot imagine life away from the sea.
