Officials in England drag a lake and uncover the lifeless body of a young girl. This discovery is initially viewed as a suicide, setting a grim tone for the unfolding events.

Penny Appleby, a young woman confined to a wheelchair, arrives in Nice, France. She is greeted warmly by her stepmother Jane but learns that her father is away on business.

That night, Penny hears mysterious noises and ventures out to the summer house. To her horror, she finds her father's corpse sitting upright in a chair, which triggers her panic and confusion.

In her terror, Penny races out of the summer house in her wheelchair and accidentally falls into the pool. Bob, the chauffeur, dives in to rescue her, bringing her back to consciousness.

Despite her insistence about the corpse, a trip back to the summer house yields no evidence. This leaves Penny confused and questioning her own sanity, especially when she speaks to her father on the phone.

Penny begins to suspect that her stepmother Jane and Dr. Gerrard are involved in a secret affair. The paranoia grows as she considers the possibility that they might have murdered her father.

Teaming up with Bob, Penny decides to search the house for her father's body. Their investigation leads them to a meat freezer, but what they find inside is not what they expected.

After Penny's accident, Jane meets with the solicitor, who reveals shocking news. He informs her that while there was only one body in the car, Penny had allegedly committed suicide weeks prior.

Jane discovers that the girl she thought was Penny in a wheelchair is actually Emily Frenchmen, Penny's best friend. Emily was investigating Penny's situation after receiving a troubling call from her father.

Emily explains to Jane that she had aligned with Dr. Gerrard to expose the truth about Penny's father’s murder. Her presence at the estate has unveiled the conspiracy surrounding Penny's tragic fate.

As the truth unfolds, Bob rushes into the house, frantically searching for Penny. In a moment of rage, he kicks the wheelchair off the cliff, leading to a tragic turn of events.

After the dramatic events, police arrive and arrest Bob for his actions. With the truth now known, Dr. Gerrard comforts Emily, who has managed to vindicate her friend Penny.
