What Happens in School of Rock: The Musical: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of School of Rock: The Musical (2015) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

The story follows Dewey Finn, a struggling rock guitarist who is kicked out of his band, No Vacancy, for his disruptive behavior. Facing financial ruin and pressure from his friend Ned Schneebly and Ned's domineering girlfriend Patty di Marco, Dewey finds himself in a desperate situation. When an opportunity arises for a substitute teacher position at the prestigious Horace Green School, Dewey impulsively pretends to be Ned to secure the job.

Upon arriving at the school, Dewey meets the strict principal, Rosalie Mullins, and finds himself in a classroom of rigid, overachieving students. Disgusted by the school's oppressive atmosphere, Dewey discovers that his students possess hidden musical talents. He decides to transform the class into a rock band to compete in the Battle of the Bands. He assigns specific roles to the children: Zack on electric guitar, Katie on bass, Shonelle as a backup singer, Madison as a roadie, James as security, and the eccentric Billy as the band's stylist. To manage the operation, he appoints the ambitious Summer as the band's manager, while the shy Tomika eventually emerges as the powerful lead vocalist.

Dewey teaches the children to rebel against "the Man," encouraging them to express their true selves through music. Along the way, he forms an unexpected bond with Principal Mullins, helping her rediscover her own lost passion for rock music. However, the deception falls apart when Patty di Marco discovers the truth and exposes Dewey's identity to the parents.

Despite the chaos, the students stand by Dewey, recognizing him as a true mentor. They steal a bus to reach the competition just in time. During their performance, the children stun their parents and the audience with their talent and confidence. Although they don't win the competition, the experience bridges the gap between the children and their parents. In the end, Rosalie Mullins protects Dewey from legal trouble, and the spirit of rock and roll permanently changes the rigid curriculum of Horace Green.
