Reunion and gold discovery

The Mesquiteers, led by Stony Brooke, reunite with their old friend Dave Carson near Santa Fe Junction. They meet Dave's kids Billy and JulieJane and Dave's older daughter Nancy. Dave reveals that he has found gold on his land but refuses to file a claim because it would alert the town mayor, a man he distrusts.

After chasing two trespassers from Dave's property, the Mesquiteers catch one while the other escapes; the captured man reports to the mayor that Dave has found gold on his land. The mayor now understands the wealth and power at stake, and he begins to move against them.

A captured trespasser is jailed, but the mayor pressures for a swift trial with Judge Hixon in his pocket. The judge accepts false witnesses, and the Mesquiteers are unable to mount a fair defense. When they try to speak up, the court fines them $100 each.

Seeing the corruption, Stony proposes filing a petition with the territorial governor to recall the mayor. Dave and JulieJane join the effort and set off with the petition toward the capital. The town braces for a public challenge to the mayor's rule.

Buckboard journey and murder

As Stony, Dave and JulieJane set off on a buckboard toward the capital to deliver the petition, the mayor's henchmen intercept it and plan to file a mining claim in the mayor's name at Placerburg. Stony goes ahead to file Dave's claim first while the others gather ranchers Carey and Franklin to sign the petition. A pursuit ends in a crash when the buckboard is rerouted, killing Dave and JulieJane.

Framing and arrival of the US Marshal

The mayor's lawyer suggests framing Stony for the murders. US Marshal Jim Wood, an old friend of Stony, arrives and offers help. Jim deputizes Tucson and Lullaby to guard Stony as they head toward the sheriff.

Carey and Franklin shot; telegraph sabotage

The mayor's men shoot Carey and Franklin to prevent alibis from being gathered. He also fans mob violence, demanding that Stony be strung up. Jim tries to send a telegraph for help, but the operator is loyal to the mayor and withholds the message.

Tucson and Lullaby are ambushed and held in a shack by two henchmen. Billy learns they are missing and goes to rescue them, succeeding. Carey and Franklin arrive to join the effort, and the group races back toward town to aid Stony.

Jail siege and dynamite

Back in town, the marshal fights to hold off the mob from breaking into the jail. Nancy is knocked unconscious by a rock thrown through the window. The mob then starts burning the jail and throwing dynamite; Stony retrieves the keys and escapes through the back wall blown open by the explosion.

Final confrontation and justice

Tucson and Lullaby corner the mayor, the judge, and several henchmen at gunpoint. The judge reveals he had sent a telegraph for help, and the mayor shoots him. A climactic fight follows, and the Mesquiteers emerge victorious over the corrupt officials.

Farewells and future plans

The Mesquiteers bid Nancy and Billy farewell and promise to return soon with machinery for Dave's mine. They ride off with a renewed resolve to help the mine and restore order in the town.
