Santa, a beautiful humble young woman from Chimalistac, a suburb of 1930s Mexico City, is deceived by the arrogant soldier Marcelino, causing her family and friends to reject her and forcing her exile. She takes refuge in a brothel, grows cynical and bitter, suffers abuse from the bullfighter Jarameno, and is loved by the blind pianist Hipólito.
