Santa, a beautiful and humble young woman from the quiet village of Chimalistac south of 1930s Mexico City, is betrayed by the arrogant soldier Marcelino. Shunned by family and friends, she is expelled, seeks refuge in a brothel and becomes a cynical, bitter figure, abused by the bullfighter Jarameno and silently loved by the blind pianist Hipólito.
