Samurai Spy

The film is set in the decades after Sekigahara and during the Siege of Osaka, as Japan remains under the rising influence of the Tokugawa shogunate. Yet the peace is fragile, with rival clans and spy networks threatening stability. This backdrop primes Sasuke's later involvement in inter-clan espionage and political maneuvering.

Sasuke is introduced as a spy for the Sanada Clan who longs for peace rather than ongoing conflict. He is tired of warfare and yearns for a more stable future. His weariness motivates him to avoid getting drawn into new plots, even as danger closes in.

A high-ranking Tokugawa spy, Tatewaki Koriyama, defects to a rival Toyotomi faction, throwing the balance of power into flux.
