Safety Patrol!

In the opening chaos at Rockridge Middle School, Scout Bozell attempts to handle a banana peel but triggers a larger accident: a kid trips, marbles spill, a lunchbox soars toward the principal, and a chain reaction ends with a crash involving a truck of tuna and the safety patrol's last member, Joe Lobes. The fallout erases the safety patrol list and traumatizes the school. The teachers decide Scout should join safety patrol, and Principal Tromp agrees but relocates him to Laurelview Middle School.

Scout is transferred to Laurelview Middle School as the safety patrol controversy continues. The move foreshadows higher stakes as petty theft tensions simmer between staff and patrols. Time markers hint at a fresh start at the new campus.

Laurelview is plagued by theft carried out by two staff members, Mrs. Day and Mr. Miller, who are allied with the safety patrol led by Kent Marlowe. Their schemes set the stage for Scout to be manipulated into becoming a scapegoat. The environment is tense as the mischief threatens the whole school.

During the safety patrol's introduction, Scout cheers 'Go safeties!' and the audience seems to react as if telling them to leave, signaling a hostile reception. The existing patrol resents him, and tensions grow between Scout and the group. This moment seeds the conflict that will unfold through the semester.

Scout meets T'Boo, who introduces him to Lefty, Red, Walt Whitman, Lucky, and Hannah Zapruder. T'Boo reveals a fear of frogs after a biology class incident, hinting at future challenges for the group. The new circle of friends becomes Scout's core support at Laurelview.

Meanwhile, Scout's grandfather suffers multiple broken bones after Scout unknowingly knocks him off a ladder. The accident adds a personal consequence to Scout's careless moments and motivates him to prove himself. The family drama broadens the stakes beyond school.

The principal recognizes the thefts involve a safety patrol member, prompting Kent, Mrs. Day, and Mr. Miller to seek a scapegoat. They instead recruit Scout as a new safety patrol member to deflect suspicion and push him into the fray. Scout reluctantly accepts, stepping into a role that could either redeem him or ruin him.

At a ceremony, Kent hands Mrs. Day and Mr. Miller a lighter and a key, which they sneak into Scout's pocket to frame him. The moment seems routine, but it plants the idea that Scout is involved in the mischief. The setup marks the turning point from mischief to a full-blown accusation.

Fellow patrol member Coop asks Scout to fetch gloves and discovers the key and lighter in Scout's pocket. Scout extinguishes a fire in Mrs. Marlowe's office and saves a hamster, but the falling items make it look like he staged the incident. As a result, Scout is kicked off safety patrol and barred from the Fall Ball.

Hannah's father finds and reviews a tape that shows Kent, Mrs. Day, and Mr. Miller planting the evidence on Scout. Hannah, Scout, T'Boo, and friends uncover that the true thieves are Georgina and Tim Bartlett. The group realizes the real criminals behind the school’s mischief and prepares to expose them.

The group brings the tape to Weird Al Yankovic at the Fall Ball, who publicly exposes Kent and his cronies. Tim and Georgina steal a tent and abduct Hannah onto a hot air balloon, triggering a dramatic pursuit. Scout fights to save Hannah; Tim clings to money and falls toward water, but survives thanks to a small patch of liquid.

Scout and friends rescue Georgina from the edge of a hole, and T'Boo overcomes his fear of the frog that appears during the chaos. The Bartletts are arrested, restoring order and justice to the school during the chaotic finale.

Scout is put back on safety patrol and is named captain by his hero, John Walsh. The patrol roster is rebuilt, with T'Boo, Hannah, Red, Walt, Lucky, and Lefty taking on leadership roles. The film ends with Scout finally earning his place on the safety patrol.

Grandpa Bozell makes a full recovery, but a waxer that seems to come to life earlier knocks him out by crashing through a door. The odd, playful ending leaves a final whimsical note as life at Laurelview returns to normal. The incident echoes the film’s playful, chaotic energy.

Mr. Zapruder seems to record the events to send to Wink Martindale, but his camera has no tape, leaving a final joke unresolved as the credits roll. The film closes with the school finding new order and Scout embracing his role as a leader. The tease hints at possible further adventures.
