Rustlers

Out-of-work cowhands Dick McBride and Chito Rafferty ride into the town of Trail Cross, Arizona, and immediately confront Wheeler, a rustler eager for trouble. The tense greeting establishes the uneasy balance between newcomers and the local gang. The town itself feels like a powder keg ready to ignite.

Wheeler takes offense at Trixie Fontaine's attention to Chito, and a brawl erupts in the saloon. Saloon owner Brad Carew, an ally of Wheeler's Salt River gang, breaks up the fight and orders Wheeler to the Bar One ranch. Carew's action shows his role as the gang's enforcer in Trail Cross.

At the Bar One ranch, Frank Abbott and neighbors discuss the gang's cattle thefts while Wheeler delivers a ransom note. The gang demands $2,000, but Frank refuses to pay and contemplates selling the ranch. Ruth proposes using marked money to identify the rustlers, turning the ransom into a trap.

Ruth cuts the corners from the ransom bills to mark them for later identification. Dick and Chito ride toward the Bar One after answering a 'help wanted' notice, hoping to find work. Along the way, Ruth fires on them thinking they are rustlers; Dick disarms her and playfully chides her crossness.

Dick and Chito meet Frank, who explains he is probably selling the Bar One and isn't hiring. Frank then delivers the ransom money to a masked Wheeler, who refuses to reveal the cattle's whereabouts yet. The exchange plants seeds for the inevitable confrontation between the cowboys and the gang.

Dick disarms Carew when the cowboys attempt to collect the ransom in Carew's office, while Chito slips $6,000 from the safe. They escape with the loot and head back toward the Bar One. The success makes Carew look like a factor in the gang's criminal network.

Sheriff Harmon, the gang's silent leader, tells Carew to leave town and reveals plans to kill Dick and Chito during a staged jailbreak. The scheme heightens the sense that the law itself is compromised. Tension mounts as Harmon's manipulation threatens the cowboys' safety.

Trixie slips Dick and Chito a cake with a gun planted inside, enabling their escape. They force Carew to come to the Bar One for interrogation and then watch Wheeler shoot Carew through a window before escaping toward town. The trick reveals Trixie's bold, improvisational pluck to save the day.

Dick learns from Trixie that Wheeler and Harmon are in Carew's office, prompting a tense confrontation with the gang's leadership. A dangerous gunfight erupts as the cowboys press their advantage, and Dick is momentarily trapped as the stable area is set alight. The escape hinges on timing and courage.

Frank and Ruth, convinced of the cowboys' innocence, free Chito and join the rescue. Dick escapes the burning structure and lassos the fleeing Sheriff Harmon, bringing the gang's leadership to heel. The town breathes a sigh of relief as justice closes in.

With the gang defeated, Dick and Chito reveal that they have bought a share of the Bar One, cementing a new partnership. Ruth looks on approvingly as the ranch settles into a hopeful future under the cowboys' stewardship. The town starts to recover from the turmoil.

Hearing the good news, Trixie suggests to Chito that they should get hitched, but the confirmed ladies' man panics and bolts on his horse. Ruth's amused support underscores the town's lighthearted note after the danger. The Bar One seems ready for a calmer chapter.
