Rust

At the end of Rust, Harland Rust, having been involved in a life of crime and violence, is captured and brought to trial, where he is ultimately sentenced to death by hanging. Throughout the story, we see that despite his criminal past, Harland forms a protective bond with his young grandson, Lucas, risking and even costing himself everything to keep him safe. When Harland is injured in a gunfight with law enforcement and bounty hunters, he pushes himself to protect Lucas from being harmed, killing the bounty hunter Preacher Lang just in time. To secure Lucas’s future, Harland makes a deal with the law and is allowed to escape with Lucas to Mexico, where they can start anew away from American jurisdiction. This act of mercy from Sheriff Wood Helm is driven by his belief that Lucas is too young and that his accidental killing of Gantry was not premeditated, allowing the boy to live a new life free from the law’s reach. As for Harland, his end comes swiftly once he is recaptured and tried for his past crimes, ending with his public execution. While he is portrayed by the film as a complex figure who showed moments of care and remorse, his extensive criminal deeds cannot be overlooked, and his execution serves as a stark reminder that his violent past ultimately catches up with him. The film leaves viewers pondering whether Harland’s final fate is just, but it also emphasizes themes of sacrifice, mercy, and the inescapable consequences of a violent life.
