Run for the Sun

Katie Connors, a journalist for Sight magazine, travels to the remote Mexican fishing village of San Marcos to locate the reclusive writer Mike Latimer. She hopes to learn why he vanished from public life and whether a new story is possible. Latimer, rumor has it, lives off-grid, pursuing fishing, hunting, and flying his aircraft.

Katie manages to meet Latimer, who is initially wary but gradually warmed by her persistence. He reveals that his wife was the muse behind his success and that he quit writing after she left him for his best friend. Their growing attraction complicates Katie's mission and deepens the tension between them.

Latimer suggests flying Katie to Mexico City instead of letting her go with her original plan. He asks Katie to write down her address so they can stay in touch, signaling a possible ongoing connection. Katie wrestles with her real purpose while the offer loosens the edge of her departure.

During the flight, a magnetized notebook in Katie's purse distorts the aircraft's compass, throwing them off course. They drift over the jungle as fuel runs low and navigation becomes nearly impossible. The situation quickly shifts from a purposeful flight to a survival ordeal.

The plane crashes in a jungle clearing after the failed navigation. Latimer is knocked unconscious and awakes later in a bed inside the main house of a nearby hacienda. Katie has also survived and is introduced to their unexpected rescuers.

Katie introduces Latimer to the estate’s residents: the English big-game hunter Browne, the Dutch archaeologist Dr. Van Anders, and Jan, a European on the estate. Latimer notices Browne’s isolationist stance and the fact that the estate seems to be cut off from the outside world. The group hints at a larger mystery as Latimer’s aircraft has disappeared.

A radio newscast reveals Katie's true identity and her original purpose for being there. Latimer grows offended as Katie tries to downplay her journalistic goals, deepening the trust issues between them. The revelation raises the stakes for both their relationship and their safety.

Latimer discovers a storeroom containing military gear bearing Nazi markings and other items connected to his missing aircraft. He overhears Browne and Van Anders speaking in German, confirming they have dangerous ties and a hidden agenda. The discovery pushes Latimer to consider a joint escape plan with Katie.

Latimer realizes Browne is a Nazi turncoat and that Van Anders is Colonel Von Anders, a German war criminal responsible for massacres. The revelation makes Latimer and Katie targets and intensifies the urgency to flee. The pair’s safety hinges on outsmarting a dangerous, international threat.

As Latimer and Katie attempt to escape, Jan fires at them from the edge of the estate, forcing them to retreat into the dense jungle. Browne and Van Anders lead the pursuit with the estate’s dogs by their side. The chase tests their endurance and resourcefulness as they vanish into the trees.

The pursuit continues through rough terrain, including an encounter with wild pigs that disrupt the dogs. Latimer rigs a crude booby trap that fatally kills Jan, clearing one obstacle from their path. The death underscores the brutal stakes of their escape.

Latimer and Katie reach the hacienda before their pursuers and barricade themselves inside the chapel. Van Anders pretends to bargain, then shoots through the door. Latimer uses the door’s bullet hole as a makeshift gun barrel and fatally shoots Browne, ending one of the greatest threats.

Latimer refuses to surrender or hand Browne’s plane to the attackers. He and Katie take off in Browne’s aircraft, and Van Anders tries to block their path, only to be killed by the aircraft’s propeller. They escape the estate and its hunters for a safer horizon.

Latimer and Katie lift off to safety, free from the climactic dread that hunted them. With the immediate danger behind them, they face an uncertain but hopeful future together. The film closes on their silhouetted passage over the jungle as they head toward unknown skies.
