On New Year’s Day in 1976, the world heavyweight boxing champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) has just defended his title against challenger Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) in a fiercely contested match that ends in a split decision. Both fighters are sent to the same hospital following the bout, and due to its close nature, public opinion sways towards the belief that Apollo’s victory was not guaranteed. Despite their prior agreement to avoid a rematch, Apollo’s competitive spirit leads him to challenge Rocky once again; however, Rocky opts for retirement instead.

His girlfriend, Adrian (Talia Shire), is supportive of Rocky’s decision, particularly after doctors inform him that he will require surgical intervention for a detached retina, a condition that runs the risk of causing permanent blindness. In a candid moment, Rocky seeks out Apollo to ask if he truly gave his all in the fight, to which Apollo honestly affirms.

After Rocky’s hospital discharge, he embraces the changes in his life. His newfound fame attracts an agent eager to tap into Rocky’s potential endorsements, and he feels confident enough to propose to Adrian, which she joyfully accepts. Their small wedding is followed closely by the announcement of Adrian’s pregnancy.

However, Apollo is consumed by a wave of negative attention, including hate mail suggesting he rigged their first fight. This obsession drives him to seek a rematch as a means of redemption, despite the objections from his loved ones. Meanwhile, Rocky, who initially appears unbothered by Apollo’s tactics, soon faces financial troubles due to his lack of experience managing money. He ends up investing his fight earnings and endorsements into condominiums, purchasing lavish gifts for Adrian, but struggles with reading scripts for advertisements.

As Rocky’s finances dwindle and work opportunities become scarce—limited to low-skilled labor—he is forced to sell personal possessions to make ends meet. Encouraged by an old friend, Tony Gazzo (Joe Spinell), Rocky considers stepping back into the ring. After a public insult from Apollo ages the situation, he seeks guidance from his trainer, Mickey Goldmill (Burgess Meredith). Initially refusing to train Rocky due to the risk to his health, Mickey changes his mind, understanding the urgency. Adrian warns Rocky of potential dangers involved in boxing again, reminding him of his eye condition, but he believes that fighting is the only way to support their family.

Mickey devises a training regimen that forces Rocky to adapt by boxing right-handed to mitigate the risk to his eye and disrupt Apollo’s strategy. The training becomes intense, with Rocky catching chickens and enduring grueling sessions to build his speed and stamina. Tensions escalate when Adrian faints during a confrontation with her brother Paulie (Burt Young) and is later rushed to the hospital, where she gives birth prematurely. Though their son is healthy, Adrian slips into a coma, leaving Rocky devastated. He vows to remain by her side until she awakens and refuses to meet his son until then.

Once Adrian regains consciousness, she is presented with their baby boy, named Robert “Rocky Jr.” (Seargeoh Stallone). With Adrian’s blessings, Rocky throws himself into training for the rematch, gathering support from the entire city of Philadelphia. Rocky’s training sessions become legendary, embodying determination and grit as he runs through the streets, climaxes at the famous staircase, and embraces the spirit of his fans.

On Thanksgiving, the highly anticipated rematch unfolds. Apollo boldly declares that he will defeat Rocky in less than two rounds, wishing to erase any doubt from the public’s mind about his previous win. As the action heats up, Rocky faces fierce challenges, with Apollo knocking him down twice in the initial rounds. Yet, Rocky’s resilience shines through as he refuses to stay down.

In a dramatic twist during the final round, Rocky shifts back to his original stance and surprises Apollo with powerful counter punches, changing the course of the fight. In an exhilarating finish, both fighters hit the canvas, struggling against the toll of their efforts. But Rocky, exhibiting unparalleled grit, rises by the count of nine, while Apollo succumbs, allowing Rocky to seize victory by knockout and claim the heavyweight championship.

In the aftermath, Rocky delivers a heartfelt speech to the cheering crowd, triumphantly raising the championship belt overhead with a special message for Adrian, who is watching from home: > “Yo, Adrian, I did it!”
