Riverworld

Riverworld takes place in two main settings: present-day Singapore where the story begins, and the titular Riverworld, a surreal, purgatorial afterlife realm characterized by luminous waters and endless horizons. Unlike a traditional heaven or hell, Riverworld exists as a timeless otherworldly dimension where reborn souls inhabit an endless river, creating an eerie and unsettling atmosphere far from conventional notions of the afterlife.

The Earth-bound portion unfolds in early 21st century Singapore, depicted as a modern city-state with gleaming skylines and contemporary urban life. Once characters die in Singapore, they enter Riverworld, which exists outside normal time, it's a timeless realm where figures from various historical eras coexist, and where time behaves differently than in the living world.

Riverworld explores three core themes: Second Chances, as the realm offers every soul an opportunity to redefine their existence beyond death, testing how love and relationships endure; Power and Control, depicted through a civil war among caretakers where immortality does not eliminate political intrigue and moral ambiguity; and Alliances Across Time, showing how characters from different eras like Mark Twain and Tomoe Gozen unite to face the realm's challenges.

Riverworld is about a couple, Matt and Jessie, who die in a terrorist attack in Singapore and awaken in a mysterious afterlife realm where every human who ever lived has been reborn along an endless river. The story explores whether love can survive death, what second chances truly mean, and how individuals navigate moral tests when confronted with immortality, political conflict, and the uncertainty of their ultimate fate.

Matt Ellman is a battle-hardened war reporter who travels to Singapore with plans to propose to Jessie. After their deaths launch him into Riverworld, he becomes the story's central protagonist, driven by quick thinking and a desire to seek answers about the realm while protecting those he loves. He must navigate new loyalties and decide what kind of life he wants to rebuild in this afterlife.

Jessie Machalan is Matt's partner who travels with him to Singapore and dies alongside him in the terrorist attack. In Riverworld, she serves as Matt's beacon of hope and grounding force, a resilient, supportive character who remains a catalyst for his choices. She embodies the theme of whether love can endure beyond death.
