An unmanned interstellar spacecraft, Von Braun, departs Earth orbit, traveling at 0.2c toward Darwin IV. The journey spans six and a half light-years and lasts about 42 years. Its mission is to deploy reconnaissance and landing probes once Darwin IV is reached.

Upon arriving in Darwin IV's orbit, the Darwin Reconnaissance Orbiter is deployed to scout landing sites for the takeoff probes. It searches for habitable zones and potential hazards before touchdown. The orbiter relays data back to the Von Braun and future missions.

The first probe, Balboa, catastrophically fails during atmospheric entry when a wing fails to unfold, causing the lifting body to explode. Backup systems may be impaired, marking a harsh start to the mission. The loss underscores the dangers of Darwin IV reconnaissance.

Two backup probes, Leonardo da Vinci (Leo) and Isaac Newton (Ike), successfully land on Darwin IV and begin studying the indigenous lifeforms. They carry holographic messages intended for any sapient species they might encounter. The landing marks a shift from reconnaissance to direct exploration.

Ike's voyage takes him to a pocket forest where he observes a flock of Trunk Suckers and their predator, the Daggerwrist. He catalogs the life forms and notes the complex food chains on Darwin IV. His findings set the tone for later comparisons with the planet's other fauna.

A massive hurricane-like storm hits Ike's area, forcing him to the sky to avoid danger. He launches weather balloons to stay aloft and continue observations from above the storm. The maneuver demonstrates Darwin IV's extreme weather and Ike's adaptability.

Leo journeys to the planet's mountain ranges and encounters Unths engaged in rutting-like behavior. The observation adds to the picture of Darwin IV's unfamiliar ecosystems. He records behaviors for later analysis aboard the mothership.

Leo briefly re-establishes contact with the Von Braun until a mysterious, evasive creature interferes. The disturbance prompts the mothership to order Ike to search for Leo, suggesting intelligent life on Darwin IV.

Ike's route takes him over Darwin IV's perilous terrain and to the planet's only sea, which proves to be Amoebic and hostile. The sea becomes a source of danger as it is also the hunting ground for giant Sea Striders. Ike pushes on, seeking Leo and more data.

Ike finds Leo's last known location, only to be attacked by a Skewer. The creature is killed by a spear before Ike can respond, marking a violent confrontation in the field. Ike continues to unravel the mystery of Leo's fate and the planet's residents.

Investigating Leo's location, Ike encounters the Eosapiens, a floating, sapient species that has been trailing the probes. He recognizes their intelligence and pauses to assess whether they are friend or foe. The discovery introduces a new, potentially pivotal relationship.

Ike projects a holographic message to the Eosapien tribe, signaling communicates intent and seeking dialogue. The Eosapiens respond with signs of intelligence akin to early humans, and a third Eosapien appears, hinting at a larger, watchful community. Communication opens a fragile channel between species.

One Eosapien misreads the camera disk as an attack and destroys it, provoking a direct assault on Ike. The other Eosapiens join in, and the wrecked disk records Ike being carried away by the tribe. The encounter leaves Ike in a precarious position among the Eosapiens.

Interspersed between scenes, commentary from notable people discusses the fictional Darwin IV world and the plausibility of extraterrestrial life. The documentary-like segments contextualize the mission within a broader scientific discourse. The program leaves audiences with questions about life beyond Earth.
