Alien Planet follows an unmanned interstellar mission, the Von Braun, as it departs Earth’s orbit and heads toward Darwin IV, a world about 6.5 light-years away, traveling at about 0.2c. After a long voyage of 42 years, the ship enters orbit and deploys the Darwin Reconnaissance Orbiter to scout landing sites. The first probe, Balboa, fails during entry when one wing fails to unfold, causing Balboa and its lifting body to explode on-impact. Two backup probes, Leonardo da Vinci (Leo) and Isaac Newton (Ike), touch down successfully and begin a careful, wide-ranging survey of Darwin IV’s ecology, unraveling a landscape that hosts a range of bizarre, sometimes dangerous lifeforms. The mission is guided from the orbiting Von Braun by a supercomputer, while the two probes carry a holographic message to any intelligent life they might encounter. Ike’s journey sweeps across meadows and gullies where he encounters Grovebacks, a herd of Littoralopes, and airborne predators called Skewers, all while a Groveback is felled by a swarm of Beach Quills and a group of Prongheads pursues a Gyrosprinter. Ike’s route also crosses the planet’s sole sea, which proves to be Amoebic in nature and capable of attacking, yet serving as a feeding ground for colossal Sea Striders. In a later sequence, Ike tracks Leo’s last known location and narrowly escapes a Skewer attack that is finally thwarted by a spear. The ascent of the story is anchored by Ike’s discovery of the sapient, elusive Eosapiens—a floating, telepathic-tentacled tribe that has been shadowing the two probes. Ike presents the holographic message to the Eosapiens and learns that the species is genuinely intelligent, with a level of sophistication comparable to early humans. To document the moment, Ike launches a camera disk, though one Eosapien misinterprets the act as a deliberate aggression and destroys the disk.
