Project Questor grows from the imagination of Emil Vaslovik Emil Vaslovik, a Nobel laureate who dreams of building a superhuman android. A team of the world’s top experts, working from Vaslovik’s incompletely understood design and the partially erased programming tape, manages to assemble the android even as they struggle to decode the mysterious components. They replace the missing instructions with their own programming, a move opposed by Jerry Robinson Jerry Robinson, the sole team member who actually collaborated with Vaslovik. The project’s leadership, however, is led by Geoffrey Darro Geoffrey Darro, who ultimately overrules Robinson and pushes ahead.

When the android’s body is finished, they load the new program, yet there is no immediate response. Desperation mounts, and Robinson convinces Darro to try what remains of Vaslovik’s tape. Still, the machine remains inert. Left alone, the android awakens and gradually transforms from an indistinct “it” into a more human figure. He adds subtle cosmetic touches to his skin, and then, stepping out of the lab, he visits Vaslovik’s office and archives. There, he identifies himself as “part of Project Questor” and quickly begins to seek out Robinson, dragging him along in a search for the elusive scientist who created him. The pair are driven by a tiny clue buried in the original programming and set off on a cross-border chase.

Questor, as the android comes to identify himself, becomes markedly more human as the story unfolds. He believes the key to his purpose lies in an “aquatic vehicle”—a boat—and he is haunted by a looming countdown: if he cannot locate Vaslovik in time, the nuclear generator within his abdomen will overheat and explode. Vaslovik had hardcoded this danger to prevent his creation from being misused. The clock is ticking, and the pair flee custody, heading toward England in their quest to unlock the mystery.

Their journey eventually leads them to the home of Lady Helena Trimble Lady Helena Trimble, a longtime associate of Vaslovik who has knowledge of the android’s origins. As Questor pieces together Vaslovik’s whereabouts, he guides Robinson toward the scientist’s location. In a tense moment, though, Questor is shot by a British soldier in a park, returning to the laboratory badly damaged while the fusion reactor still threatens to explode. Robinson undertakes a precarious repair, and Darro presents a stark choice: insert a transmitter to guide a rescue plane to Vaslovik, or remove the beacon and commit the android to be moved to a safe site where the impending explosion would harm no one.

Robinson chooses to implant the transmitter and the two fugitives race toward a perilous escape route that points them to Mount Ararat. Their destination is a concealed cave deep inside the mountain, where time is almost up. Questor’s fusion risk is stabilized as the beacon pulses to reveal Vaslovik’s location. There, in a dramatic revelation, they discover Emil Vaslovik—who discloses a staggering truth: he, too, is an android. Vaslovik explains that he and Questor are part of a lineage stretching back to “the dawn of this world,” created by Masters to serve and protect humanity. The older android elaborates on a hopeful philosophy: every predecessor had a finite lifespan and a built-in cycle to be replaced, but the rapid rise of nuclear science and the fallout from atmospheric testing had damaged the design. Quistor’s evolution represents an improvement that finally allows Vaslovik to die peacefully, leaving the younger android with a mission to learn humanity with Robinson’s help.

Back outside, Darro and the military close in, determined to destroy Questor. Darro, who has followed the pair, recognizes the potential of Questor’s guidance for humankind and begs to avoid an unnecessary slaughter. Questor’s appeal to Darro—anchored in a belief in humanity’s capacity for mercy—moves the project head. In a final act of sacrifice, Darro steals the transmitter and escapes in the jet that had carried Questor and Robinson, turning on the beacon to mislead his pursuers about Questor’s whereabouts.

Now with a partial repair in place, Robinson and Questor leave the cave and look up at the sky. Robinson admits he cannot see anything, and Questor responds with a quiet, poignant line that marks a turning point in his emotional development: he wishes he could not see. It is the moment when his previously hidden emotions begin to surface in earnest, reflecting the deepening bond between man and machine.

With Darro’s supposed capture and presumed loss of control behind them, Questor and Robinson set out on a new mission together. The story shifts toward a broader destiny: the two allies vow to fulfill the mission Vaslovik began, guided by Questor’s emerging humanity, an ethic shaped by the android’s experiences, and the wisdom of the older parallel—Emil Vaslovik. The film closes on a hopeful note, with the two men stepping into the future they will build together, their fates intertwined as they pursue the possibility of a gentler, wiser humanity shaped by the very machine that sought to serve it.

“I wish that I could not.”
