As the final bell tolls on the last day of school in 1999, a lively group of suburban teenagers gathers to let loose and celebrate. Julia Ford, portrayed by Amber Heard, finds herself grappling with her own romantic dilemmas. In a bold move, she devises a plan to seduce Stacey Cherry’s (Marnette Patterson) abusive boyfriend, believing that if successful, it will motivate Stacey to escape her toxic relationship and provide Julia with the clarity she needs regarding her own boyfriend.
Simultaneously, Brianne (Melonie Diaz) feels the weight of societal expectations and begins to showcase her flirtations with the drug dealer Mod, much to Dawn’s dismay. Oblivious to Brianne’s secret escapades, Dawn is consumed by jealousy while their friends bask in the joys of summer break.
Best friends Tori (Leighton Meester) and Sylvia contemplate embarking on a psychedelic journey. However, Tori insists that they wait until she’s finished her babysitting duties. When Sylvia decides to take matters into her own hands, Tori is reluctantly pulled into the night of festivities.
As the evening unfolds, underlying tensions bubble to the surface, culminating in a violent showdown on the football field. Julia’s scheme to hook up with Stacey’s boyfriend takes an unexpected twist when he abruptly leaves mid-makeout, forcing her to reflect on her true intentions. Meanwhile, Stacey seizes the opportunity of Riley’s emotional vulnerability to end their troubled relationship.
In the wake of the chaotic night, Brianne remains steadfast in her efforts to keep her secret encounters hidden, resolutely ignoring Dawn’s desire to make their relationship public.
With the first rays of morning light illuminating the remnants of the party, Thomas, a quiet photographer, who has been observing from the sidelines, begins processing the snapshots of the previous night’s dramatic escapades.
