What Happens in Red Garden: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Red Garden (2016) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Kate, Rachel, Rose, and Claire are students at a private school on Roosevelt Island, New York City, who wake up one morning with an unsettling sense of restlessness and no memory of the previous night. The situation turns grim when the school announces that their friend, Lise, has been found dead.

The girls are soon lured by butterflies to a mysterious encounter with a woman named Lula and her partner JC. They are shocked to learn that they are actually dead and have been reanimated into special bodies by an organization called Animus. To earn their keep, they must use superhuman abilities to fight "monsters" that appear human; failure means permanent death, a fate that already befell several other girls. Lula reveals that the group died shortly after discovering Lise's body, and she promises to eventually return them to their original lives.

The girls find themselves caught in a centuries-old conflict between the Animus and the Dolore clans. This war centers on a pair of the Book of Curses:

* The Dolore stole one book, leaving them cursed to become beasts and die.

* The Animus hold the other, leaving them cursed with eternal life but a lack of freedom.

While the Dolore member Hervé attempts to save his family from their curse by stealing the companion book, the girls realize that if they fail their mission, they will lose all memories of their friends and family, condemned to live forever in total oblivion. The story deeply explores their emotional struggles as they balance their secret lives as fighters with their complex personal relationships.

Set 300 years in the future, the girls—now immortal and lacking memories of their first 17 years—continue to divide their time between school and vigilantism. Their peace is disrupted by two transfer students, Louise and Edgar Mayer. After battling a giant robot and a mechanical device controlled by Edgar, it is revealed that Louise is a powerful android who envies the girls' immortality. Ultimately, the island's own vegetation intervenes to envelop Louise and Edgar. Following their graduation, the girls decide to move on with their lives, planning to return to the island in a few hundred years.

More Movies Like Red Garden, by Mood & Story

Curated lists built around what makes Red Garden tick: the same mood, the same kind of story or the same emotional payoff. Each list explains why these movies belong together.

Supernatural found family movies like Red Garden

Dead youth and immortal outcasts find family in a hostile supernatural world. If you liked Red Garden, explore movies like Red Garden: supernatural fantasy dramas featuring reanimated youth, immortal outsiders, and fragile bonds forged against monsters and curses. Expect tense battles, eerie otherworldly settings, youthful melancholy, and a bittersweet sense of belonging.

  • supernatural
  • youthful
  • found family
  • immortal isolation
  • melancholic
  • tense
  • Tone: tense, melancholic, bittersweet
  • Pacing: variable, alternating action and reflection
Why these movies?

The story pattern: Young or otherwise alienated characters enter an otherworldly hierarchy where death does not offer a normal ending. Survival depends on shifting loyalties, unstable identities, and uneasy alliances. As they fight threats beyond ordinary human limits, affection becomes a fragile anchor and family is something they must build rather than inherit.

Why they belong together: These movies are grouped by their shared fusion of tense supernatural danger and chosen-family intimacy. Their characters face monsters and coercive supernatural rules while navigating altered bodies, fractured memories, and unstable loyalties. Youthful camaraderie softens the threat without making it harmless, and every moment of belonging carries the ache of isolation or the knowledge that ordinary life has become unreachable.

Afterlife grief and regret movies like Red Garden

Grief drives the living and the dead toward painful reckonings. If you enjoyed Red Garden's tense blend of supernatural drama, grief, and remorse, explore movies like Red Garden where loss lingers, redemption is uncertain, and the boundary between life and death drives the story. Characters must reckon with the damage they caused and the loved ones left behind.

  • grief
  • regret
  • afterlife
  • second chances
  • mortality
  • remorse
  • Tone: melancholic, fatalistic, sorrowful
  • Pacing: variable, weighted toward reflection
Why these movies?

The story pattern: The pattern begins with a painful separation or death, followed by a character's failure to meet obligations to those who depend on them. Grief becomes obsession, and the afterlife or an equally supernatural space forces a reckoning with consequences rather than granting an easy escape. The journey moves from denial and regret toward partial understanding, but closure remains hard-won and emotionally bittersweet.

Why they belong together: The common thread is not the supernatural premise itself but the emotional logic of irreversible loss. Regret, neglected responsibilities, grief, and the possibility of a second chance drive these narratives. Even when conflicts resolve, the characters remain marked by what they could not prevent, giving the stories a somber, fatalistic edge and a bittersweet final note.
