SpangaS Op Survival

During a week-long study trip to the Ardennes Forest in Belgium, the students of Spangalis College are guided by two teachers: Jochem Damstra, Steef Hupkes, and Madge Johnson, Judy Doorman. They arrive near the base camp and are split into teams to tackle a variety of tasks, designed to test problem-solving, cooperation, and grit in the wild. The atmosphere is intended to be educational and collaborative, but the forest quickly proves to be a testing ground where danger and tension can surge without warning. The highlight of the week is the two-team “dropping” challenge, a high-stakes exercise that pushes competition to a fever pitch and makes the certainty of a positive outcome feel far from assured. In the end, only by working together can the groups safely find their way back to camp, reinforced by teamwork and trust.

Among the students is Jolé van Haagendoorn, Gaby Blaaser. Flip van Hamel, Jasper Gottlieb, is openly gay, and his boyfriend Koen van Wageningen, Jeffrey Hamilton, breaks up with him before the trip, though they still share a farewell kiss. Tobias van Hamel, Marius Gottlieb, tries to push Flip into bullying him, including discarding a stuffed toy to which Irmak Sertkaya, Fatma Genç is attached, and Tobias also squeezes a tube of honey into someone’s bag, sparking a confrontation that sets the tone for the group’s frictions.

Barry Hartveld, Tim Murck, has left school but joins the journey unofficially, drawn to Lana van Hamel, Roos Smit, and even shares a kiss with her. When Nassim Gharbi, Chems Eddine Amar, discovers the moment, he becomes furious, abruptly ending his relationship with Lana and erupting into a tense clash with Barry that underscores the volatility simmering beneath the surface.

The Drop unfolds in two competing teams as a storm moves in. Tobias manipulates a clue, causing the other group—comprising Flip, Avalanche Blokland, Annabella Vermeulen, and Luxor de Haan—to get lost and spend a night in a cave. Flip collapses after a fall, hearing a crack in his arm, and Tobias seems to feel Flip’s pain as if he shares it. Luxor de Haan, Sebastian Wulff, later realizes the arm is dislocated; the injury is reset, and Flip receives a makeshift sling fashioned from the headscarf of Marjana El Asmi. The drama underscores how interlinked the students’ fates are, and how quickly missteps can ripple through the group.

The next morning brings clearer weather, and Luxor’s earlier copied clue proves crucial, helping the rescued team recalibrate their route back to base camp. Meanwhile, the faction led by Tobias sets out on one of the rafts to search for the others; the river remains turbulent from the previous night’s rain. The raft overturns, and Fay Picaroon, Titia Hoogendoorn, nearly drowns before being resuscitated. After a tense sequence of near misses, everyone makes it back to safety, and the week wraps with the hard-earned reminder that cooperation and resilience are essential when nature tests a group’s limits.
