Jimmy Roberts, a 12-year-old student, endures constant bullying during a class trip to Gollyworld. On the suggestion of his friend Craig, the popular kids pressure him to search for Appleday's frozen brain inside Tux's Arctic Adventure.

Inside the ride, Jimmy meets Sonny, Milt Appleday's clumsy son who is also after the brain. Jimmy flees as Sonny pursues him, and an oncoming Crocco's Train knocks him off balance.

Jimmy is rushed to an on-premises hospital where Milt Appleday's brain is transplanted into his head. He survives the operation and can now see Appleday's cartoon characters as real people.

Robin helps Jimmy realize that Sonny sabotaged the characters' popularity with his own ideas. The revelation pushes Jimmy to use Milt's brain to restore the characters’ fame.

Jimmy is hired as the new president of Appleday Pictures, replacing Sonny. The mascot Golly believes Jimmy can restore the studio's fame, and Jimmy channels Milt's creativity to generate instant popularity.

Jimmy becomes immensely popular but neglects school and friends as the world of Appleday Pictures expands around him. He pours himself into his role, leaving little time for personal relationships.

Sonny deceives Jimmy's father into renting him a room in Jimmy's house and quietly dines with the Roberts family. He is meanwhile scheming to remove Milt's brain from Jimmy's head.

Sonny devises a plan to modify Crocco's Train with dangerous devices that could decapitate Jimmy. He loudly proclaims the plan, and Yancy, Jimmy’s alien sister, overhears and grows suspicious.

Robin warns Jimmy that the cartoons are taking advantage of him, but he dismisses her and heads to his television debut. At the studio, Sonny abducts Robin to further his scheme.

On air, Jimmy tells Golly that being president hasn’t brought what he wanted, and Golly scolds him for being a pushover. Realizing Robin was right, Jimmy denounces his position on-air.

Golly temporarily transforms Jimmy into a cartoon knight. Jimmy then boards Crocco's Train, destroys the engine, and saves Robin from danger.

Yancy teleports Sonny home to save Jimmy, then teleports herself away. Robin and Jimmy return to Craig's house and mend their friendship.

Though Robin and Jimmy reconcile, the partygoers who witnessed his speech choosing friendship over popularity leave, signaling a shift in the social dynamic. The scene suggests his message has left a lasting impact on some, even as others drift away.

In a mid-credits scene, Sonny attempts to extract Jimmy's brain with a crane-like device, but misses. The moment hints at further trouble looming beyond the film's main action.
