In 1958, the quiz show 'Twenty-One' begins its regular episodes with high expectations. The questions are meticulously secured in a bank vault, ready to be revealed to contestants and viewers alike.

Reigning champion Herb Stempel, portrayed by John Turturro, dominates the game, amassing a formidable streak of correct answers. However, as his popularity dwindles, both NBC and Geritol seek to revitalize interest by introducing new competitors.

Producers Dan Enright and Albert Freedman are intrigued when Charles Van Doren, a promising Columbia University instructor, expresses interest in auditioning for the show. His impressive background and potential to challenge Stempel capture their attention.

Richard Goodwin, a young Congressional lawyer, ventures to New York City to investigate ongoing rumors about quiz show rigging. He interviews several contestants, including both Stempel and Van Doren, trying to uncover the truth.

Amidst the investigation, Stempel provides damaging information about Van Doren's involvement in the rigging of 'Twenty-One.' Goodwin receives further evidence from another contestant who had pre-sent answers, strengthening the case against NBC.
