Quilombo dos Palmares was a 17th‑century Brazilian community of escaped slaves that evolved into a democratic enclave welcoming Indians, Jews and other outcasts. Led by Ganga Zumba, the first freely elected leader in the Western Hemisphere, it defied Portuguese attempts at conquest. Director Carlos Diegues dramatizes its rise and fall while drawing parallels to contemporary Brazil.
