Queen of Hearts

Anne, a lawyer in Denmark, is married to Peter and has twin daughters named Frida and Franny. The family is preparing to welcome Gustav, Peter's teenage son from a previous marriage, into their home to live with them.

Gustav arrives in Denmark, and Anne starts to build a relationship with him. As he settles into the family, tensions arise between Gustav and Peter as Gustav expresses a desire for independence despite being a minor.

One day, Anne returns home to find that they have been burglarized. She reports the incident to the police, but later discovers one of her stolen items in Gustav's laundry, leading her to suspect him of the crime.

Anne confronts Gustav with the evidence of the theft, but rather than reporting him, she promises to keep it a secret if Gustav helps out around the house. This sets a precedent for their complicated relationship moving forward.

Gustav begins to adapt to family life, enjoying activities such as reading the Danish version of 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' to the twin girls. This cheerful facade hides the underlying tension in his relationship with Anne.

Gustav brings his girlfriend Amanda home, introducing her to Anne. However, Anne feels distressed when she overhears the couple having sex, leading to increased tension in the household.

During a gathering on the balcony with guests, Anne leaves the group to meet Gustav at a bar, where she kisses him. This encounter triggers a secret love affair between them, complicating their lives.

As their secret relationship unfolds, Gustav interviews Anne with a tape recorder, asking her about her past sexual experiences. Anne avoids revealing her previous affairs, choosing to keep their connection discreet.

The family celebrates Frida and Franny's birthday. During the event, Gustav steals a moment with Anne and kisses her, but Anne tries to maintain boundaries, emphasizing that such affection is inappropriate in public.

After a trip to their cabin, Peter confronts Anne about Gustav's desire to attend boarding school and reveals that Gustav has disclosed their affair. Anne vehemently denies the allegations, insisting that Gustav is lying.

As tensions escalate, Gustav decides to leave for boarding school. During the farewell, he is upset and confronts Anne about their affair, accusing her of lying about their relationship, which she still denies.

Years later, Gustav visits Anne at her office and threatens to expose their illegal affair. He declares he will reveal details about their relationship and what transpired between them, but Anne remains unfazed, claiming no one would believe him.

Gustav becomes more desperate, banging on Anne's door at night, asking for his father. When rejected, he tries to kiss Anne, but she pushes him away. This encounter leaves him in tears, showcasing his emotional turmoil.

Anne and Peter receive devastating news that Gustav is missing from his boarding school. The police later inform them that Gustav's body was found near the cabin where he froze to death, shocking everyone in the family.

Overcome with guilt, Anne breaks down in the bathroom, reflecting on her role in Gustav's tragic fate. When she tries to reassure Peter that it isn't his fault, he violently silences her, leading the family to prepare for Gustav's funeral.
